4K displayport cables ?

Postposted on Sun Apr 20, 2014 7:40 pm

Ordered the Samsung 4K single tile display on sale at newegg for $600 preorder.
I'm going to have to buy a new graphic card.
My 6950 Mini-DisplayPort is limited to 2560x1600 per display.

Heh, makes me wonder if I had gone for the 4K 2-tile display that it might have worked.
2560x1600 per display would cover it but I would be amazed if it worked.

But the problem seems to be finding a 4K displayport cable.
Almost everything I've looked on Newegg says
(if it says anything at all) "upto 2560x1600 res" so they are out.

One mentioned displayport 1.1a and another mentioned 8 gig transfer or so.

And if I understood correctly from Wikipedia, the cables can have
1 to 4 lanes active and no cable mentioned "lanes". Guess the 8 gig
cable would be a 2 lane cable.

The Asus 290 has full displayport size but I find the same limits/lack of
information on the cables.
The monitor comes with a displayport cable but I doubt it is 10 feet
so I have find one to buy.

Thought Welcome!

They say it is one exception, RBR reduced bitrate cables that only goes to 1080p. Is that for cables of 16ft 5m or longer? I need a 6m cable for my Asus swift pg278q it has 2560x1440@144hz :o

update:
A DisplayPort cable is a DisplayPort cable; EXCEPT if it a “reduced bit rate” (or RBR) cable, which is typically a 15m cable designed for projector applications, and they only support up to 1080P; OR if it is an active cable, which will not support the new HBR2 rate introduced in the DP 1.2 standard.

I guess my 6m cable is fine, just don't buy it from ebay china :-p

I have a Dell UP2414Q 4K monitor. It has mini-Displayport and Displayport inputs.

I ordered these two cables from Cable Wholesale (cablewholesale.com):
Code: Select all
10H1-60115        DisplayPort 1.2 Video Cable, Displa      1    11.69     11.69
                  yPort Male, 15 foot
10H1-62115        Mini DisplayPort 1.2 Video Cable, M      1    10.67     10.67
                  ini DisplayPort Male to DisplayPort
                   Male, 15 foot

The only one that worked (15 feet at 4K must be hard) is the 10H1-60115. The miniDP one was too thin and of course it didn't work.

Thanks for the info. If you need a mini displayport cable maybe check the certified list:

- As mentioned previously, it is important to avoid low quality DisplayPort cables to prevent unexpected video or audio problems, and sometimes even system power-up problems. Always buy cables from a reputable computer system or accessory brand. Or safer yet, buy a cable that is DisplayPort certified. DisplayPort certified cables are listed here.
