Re: 6GB 780s - Where are they?

Mon Jun 23, 2014 1:47 am

I was just thinking the same questions as OP. I want to upgrade my existing 2GB GTX660 to a GTX780, but don't know which one to buy. Should I buy the existing 3 GB version or wait some more for the 6 GB version? Or maybe go for a GTX780Ti? Perhaps wait for Maxwell? FYI, I intend to play games (I mean GTA V PC) at 1080p (higher res monitors are out of the questions for the moment).

If you need a new card now, the 6GB of memory won't hurt but at 1080p you would struggle to fill up even half of that - you could argue it's pointless for you at this moment in time. I would put the money towards the extra power of the 780 Ti, as it averages between an extra 5-10 FPS in most games over the 780, and can easily play any game out today at 2560 x 1440/1600 resolution later if you can upgrade your screen. IMO, It struggles at 4K a bit in titles as the 3GB of video memory becomes an issue from benchmarks I've seen.

If you don't need a new card right now, and can wait, this is probably what I would do. The release is delayed though, but should be out in the last quarter of this year.

The GTX660 seems enough for now, I can still play at High Quality settings + FXAA/SMAA (some games at Very or Ultra). I was asking because a local store has the Asus GTX780ti for EUR600 (780TI-DC2OC-3GD5) and the Asus GTX780 (780-DC2OC-3GD5) for EUR439 until 30.06.2014. While reading the news the other day I realised that neither nvidia nor amd intend to cut prices in the near future, so I thought this might be a good investment

Well, the 780 seems like a good price compared to ones here (I've converted your prices into £) so it might be good if they have some left. The price of the 780Ti isn't such a good deal though, and is quite a premium for a lower relative performance gain.

If your not planning on gaming at 4K anytime soon, the 780 will be a lot faster than your 660. It will also be faster than most of the Maxwell products coming out (Maxwell focusses mainly on efficiency, so expect a 780 replacement that will be a tad faster but use 30-50% less power than it's predecessor). A GTX 780 is top of the range available today, and Maxwell's arrival won't suddenly make it useless. We're probably a few release cycles off seeing 780/Ti performance the "norm" in mainstream cards, so it will last you a good few years if you got one.

(Maxwell prices are unknown for larger cards too - The 780 replacement may be too expensive if the small price premium seen on the GTX 750/Ti is anything to go by)

20nm GPUs are still six to twelve months away. There's little point in speculating about them right now.

Thank you, both of you.

geekl33tgamer: Your answer is what I was looking for. Now let's hope they still have it on stock.
JustAnEngineer: You're most probably right. The conclusion is no use waiting for unconfirmed rumors.
