Acronis true image

Can anyone tell me which version of "Acronis true image" do I need to create a backup image of my old system drive?

Their homepage is like advertisement train-wreck with words "Windows 7" "Migrate" "Backup" and no related info whatsoever.

If I understand I can get a version of Acronis through Seagate, both new and old drive are Barracudas, but what I'd like to do now is to restore the drive as virtual machine on a new HDD to get only files I really need back. Will Seagate version allow me to do that, are those image files compatible across different true image versions?

I know you asked about Acronis and which version you need (Acronis TrueImage Home 2010 would be the one, BTW), but if you just want to get the files off an old hard drive, why go through the bother of imaging and mounting it? Why not just get an IDE to USB converter like this one that allows you to turn any hard drive into an external USB hard drive and copy the files off that way? Plus, they're always handy to have around.

Well, mostly because who knows where some weird software copies it's data files.

As I said in data hoarding thread:
There are emails in c:\pf\appdata\localsettings\somerandomfolder\{GUID}\OutlookExpress
Files and Configs in c:\Users\Profile\Appdata\roaming\VirtualStore\Vendor
Files and Configs in c:\Windows, c:\Windows\System32, c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Files and Configs in c:\PF (x86)\MS Visual Studio\Common7\bin\
Files and Configs in c:\documents and settings\profile\[most subfolders]
Files and Configs in c:\documents and settings\AllUsers\[most subfolders]
Files and Configs in [My Documents]/[My Libraries] including "Shared stuff" whatever that means
[type many more locations here]

Somehow I have a feeling I might miss something, so, working old install is the best way. I'll trim it down to 0 apps for it to be max small, but I don't want to risk and loose something with this setting saving scheme if it turns out I forgot something.

Wow, I installed the 2010 trial and it seems pretty neat.

There are tools to browse vhd and tib files, it automatically found the vhd's I had on my pc, then it allows to convert from one type to another. Pretty good!

The interface is for dumb-asses though, it takes some time to figure what those lyrically described options actually do at hardware level, but it's just like Vista and 7
