I really like VLC but it stutters roughly 5-6 times/sec when slowly panning a
scene in a movie.
My editing program plays the same section back smoothly but that is not something
I want to watch a movie with. So don't think it is hardware related.
If I cut out a 5 sec clip of the panning scene VLC plays it smoothly but not when
playing the movie.
Any others notice this problem or can suggest better viewing software? (I do like VLC tho.)

Never had any issues with VLC, but here's a suggestion if yer open to trying out another "free" windows media player:

Try Media player classic home cinema,it supports almost every format under the sun along with gpu offloading.Plus it has a 32 bit and 64 bit versions.Also great video enhancements, combined screen space shaders and such.
I also use VLC but mostly for playing iso files.
Easy to find too just google MPCHC latest download.

yeah, Media player classic home cinema has been pretty good to me with its smart syncing. As long as it can reliably detect the refresh rate of the monitor it plays on, it does a best effort at reducing judders and tearing if the rates doesn't match.
I'm not sure that is the problem you're seeing though.

Sounds to me like VLC could be choking on a particular codec. What are you watching, exactly? Is it more than one file/movie?
