Not rare, just with a proprietary file format that apparently isn't intended to be played on a PC.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

It won't play on anything but the original device. It's not any standard format, and there's not even any recognizable patterns in the sample file. You have 21 megabytes of data there, but it could be from /dev/random as far as analysis can tell.
Please don't edit my signature for me. Thanks.

Agree on the proprietory format... I ran it by a codec detector that I use and it is likely the format they used they dropped the headers and footers to obscure it as it is the only file it has ever failed me on.

problem solved, I bought a DBV-T receiver-recorder and Works like a charm, thanks everybody for your help.
For moderators, remove this thread if you want as I give up on opening those probably encrypted files.

Thread's probably worth preserving as a warning to anyone else who owns (or is thinking of buying) one of these TVs.

No hurry to delete here.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I came across this thread because I have EXACTLY the same issue, but with a Toshiba TV.
So it's not just an OKI problem.

This particular TV records from cable, antenna or satellite (built-in satellite tuner) but I get exactly the same result whichever of these sources I use.

It would be interesting to try to play back on another TV with recording facility, but I don't have another TV available.
There are also some small index-like files in a separate directory, about 16k each.

This kind of reminds me of the external hard-drive I was using on my FIOS DVR. When I removed it to re-use it elsewhere I discovered that the entire thing must have been encrypted. No partition table, no filesystem, nothing but a stream of seemingly random bytes starting at LBA 0.

Much like that DVR HD, these files are almost certainly locked to only the TV that recorded them.

Hi! I'm testing the files from a telefunken TV. In a secondary folder (recsinfo) I found three files that mplayer recognizes as libavformat files. One of them is recognized as a file containing many streams, indeed. But these are 16 kb files. I wonder if these are the headers or tails of the moeg stream contained in the ts file.

This is what I found in my Panasonic plasma TV's manual:
"The data recorded to the USB HDD with this TV can only be played back on this TV. You cannot play back its contents with another TV (including the TV of the same model number) or any PCs."
(pdf)

So you don't need to buy the rarest brand to have encrypted recording (on top of a proprietary file system - the USB drive must be formatted by the TV).
