Oh, well. Roxio today informs me that my sn for their burning software is no good (though I bought it and I've used it for years) on my upgrade to Win 8

(Hmm - their ads also suggest they now have a new version. Coincidence perhaps?)

So what do you recommend for simply burning audio and video to disk for playback on commercial CD and DVD/BD players - not computers.

MP3/WAV to Audio CD is easy, a bunch of apps (even the free ones like CDBurnerXP) can do it.

Burning DVDs may be a bit more involved. And if you want free, you probably just have to use a few more tools to prepare the image file (stuff to convert to VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS layout) and at the end you just burn the image to the disc with apps like CDBurnerXP or even ImgBurn.

Will Windows movie maker burn to disk?

Windows 7 HP has no problem burning movies to DVD, if that is the OS you have. You edit them with Movie Maker from the Windows Live Essentials download, and then burn them to DVD using the DVD Maker option that is present in 7 HP.

But what sort of formats does Windows Movie Maker support? AVI and WMV I am pretty sure, what about MPG, MKV, MP4, TS, M2TS, etc.?

for burning, i alway use nero but if you want free look up imgburn or cdburnerxp. But i really recommend shelling out some cash and get nero. You can see how great it is here at http://www.hopreviews.com/reviews/nero-12-platinum/ if you want.
