My golf game needs help.

I used to be an avid golfer, but recently started to golf a bit more. My biggest struggle since starting again is hitting long-to-mid irons. I'm hitting woods fairly consistently, even off the fairway with a 3 or 5, so my swing mechanics can't be that bad; I can usually hit my driver 220+ with a slight fade. However with irons, especially 3 through 6, I rarely seem to be getting a clean shot, like I can't hit the sweet spot. I'm starting to wonder if the cheap set of clubs I bought when first getting back into the sport just has terrible irons; while I think blaming the clubs is a classic cop-out, is it possible the clubs are just that bad? The clubs are an assembled-in-canada brand called "World Tour", they seem to be reasonably well constructed, the irons are an oversized, cavity-back style. The funny thing is I have various old clubs hanging around, and it seems that the older style irons I have, even the muscle-back type, are easier for me to hit. Is there any more experienced golfers here that might be able to suggest something for me to try to pinpoint what I'm doing wrong?

When I go through a spell like this it usually helps to stop at the range and work on it a little bit...if nothing else just for the confidence builder. I usually find I've been standing too far away ---or too close to -- the ball. Besides, you know what they say about a 3 iron...that it's the best club to hit when it's raining, because not even God can hit one! :)

Golf is such a mental game. That's why it's so hard for me! :) Good luck!

The clubs could very well be part of the problem, cheaper clubs while they are more forgiving they will sacrifice playability for that forgiveness.

I find sometimes with my long irons I'll swing it like my short irons. Meaning that I'll be too steep on the angle of attack on the ball. You need to swing them almost like you would a wood. Not as shallow becaus you still should take a divot.

And as gerbilspy said...it wouldn't hurt to hit the range a few times to work you out of your funk.
