Plate racing is a sad joke and has been from day 1. Let the engines run unrestricted and use aero to slow them down. Or, just let them run laps at 220+. Fans would love it, though the catch fences might need a few upgrades.
ISTR a Car & Driver article from the late '80s comparing a Porsche 962 to the then-dominant NASCAR Monte Carlo at the Transportation Research Center in Ohio. IIRC, the Monte Carlo (driven by Tim Richmond) lapped at about 240 MPH once fully taped and with the engine in qualifying tune and was slightly faster than the 962.
Porsche should have brought a 917/30 for this match.
