I just got tickets for the Soccer World Cup !!!

Postposted on Fri Apr 16, 2010 3:24 pm

Woohoo !!!!!

I just bought 2 tickets for USA vs. Slovenia in Johannesburg!!
My first major sports event!!
(Cost my left arm and right testicle, though..)

I can't wait for the event to start here. It's going to be off the chain!

(now to find a USA team shirt... hmmm)

Anyone else on the forum coming to sunny South Africa for the event?

Is there not some kinda proper World Cup thread going on? :o

I just watched the first match and now on the second. Must say, looking forward to USA v England tomorrow that should be fun, although not great how they're turning it into some kinda grudge match over the BP stuff.

Still hoping Germany kick some ass..

USA v Slovenia is on the 18th right? When are you heading across?

Sports are fail, but atleast this *football* doesn't use *hands*.

I have a friend coming up to stay with me for a week from London, so I'm going to have to subject myself to an England game.

I don't even know how the name soccer got started around here, it sounds like a completely fictitious name. I'd love to see England upset, LET'S GIVE EM HELL BOYS!

I looked it up, you can thank the English for the name 'Soccer' and hate them for it, they invented it to distinguish it from "asSOCiation football".

Agreed. Those horns gave me headaches every game in the Confederations Cup and they're even worse now. Looks like I'm going to be watching most of the games muted. I wonder if there will be fewer horns in the later rounds with more international attendees.

What an impressive goal by Clint Dempsey to force a draw...

I really hope our strikers can step it up. We'll likely have to win our remaining games and outscore England to win the group and not have to face Germany in the round of 16.

USA v Slovenia is on the 18th right? When are you heading across?

I'm actually South African.
I live about 27km from Ellis Park (where Slovenia and the US are scheduled to play).
Work gave us off for the days we are attending the matches. Awesome.

I don't think the international community realise the gravity of this event for South Africans.

We have experienced some racial tension for the past 15 years. With the ANC youth league singing 'kill the farmer' etc.

BUT

This event has done something that not even the Rugby World Cup could manage.
Football was considered a 'black' sport (perhaps still is) in South African sporting culture. With Rugby considered the white-minority sport.
Being Afrikaans, I always loved Rugby, and I also love Football.

The atmosphere in SA is heart-melting.
Most have flags all over their cars.. Fuel cap, hanging out the window, hanging on the boot (trunk) like Superman's cape.. Wonderful.
We have white, black, coloureds etc chatting about everything like they were long last friends..

This is what I've been hoping for the whole of my 28 year-life. This is unity.

Car guards walk up to you, chatting about all kinds of stuff, of course also about Bafana Bafana (Zulu for boys boys).
Afrikaners go up to black guys, asking about why Tshabalala favours his right but plays on the left, and why they dont pass to the front of the player, so that they run onto the ball - like rugby..

The opening ceremony was amazing. I was at the top of Soccer City stadium, looking down. Unbelievable.
It was a story of africa, spiritual beliefs etc.
It included all kinds of cultures in SA.. Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Sepedi.. Wow.

The vuvuzela, is part of South African football culture. Been around for decades.
I dont like it, since lab tests had proved the sound generated to reach 127db. Insane. A chainsaw is roughly 121db at most.
It's fine, I just bought earplugs at the pharmacy (drugstore), so I'm all good to go.

I even made myself a Makarapa. It's a safety helmet (construction hat), that been cut apart, so that you fold the shapes forward to show anything. Mine has two players either side of a South African flag.
Awesome.

I figured, this is once in a lifetime, so make the most of it. And I am.

Internationals may scoff at the comments above, but who cares. Patriotism like now, has never been seen before here.
Our team, though not great at all, played like they had an extra 11 players. Wonderful.

At the ceremony there was not a single dry eyed South African in the stands. Amazing.
When we scored the first goal.. again, not a dry South African eye in sight.

If anyone on this forum, had the means of getting to SA during this period, do so.
We would love to welcome you.

Viva Bafana, do it for Mzansi!!
Viva!

It's like going to American Football thread and trolling about HandEgg...
It's "football" everywhere except USA where it's "soccer".
Why bother arguing ? Handegg is something like Curling - nobody cares about it enywhere else on the globe beside place where is played - and if that make rabid fans antsy/insecure about name/etc... who cares....

Meh, the Germany match was good yesterday but no way was that a red card..

Italy match is a bit..slow so far. Picking up now hopefully, they've had a couple of chances since half time.

You mean the one where Germans slaughtered the other team and won with a hockey score? True, the referee was a bit too strict there, especially considering it was not a loser-goes-home match..

Italy is always like that, very lousy in the group games, but if they're lucky enough to make into 1/16, then they start to shine! :D

Unless I'm mistaken I believe the sport is called Soccer in plenty of other countries besides the USA.

Edit: I guess only Canada, Samoa and the United States use soccer. Australia and New Zealand recently changed from Soccer to Football. I swore some of the Asian countries used Soccer too, I guess not.

Yep. That match. Thing is, that ref is always sending people off left right and centre, they should have played with this in mind more, Germany certainly did.

Italy was alright the second half, Once they got Camoranesi out it got things going more. Would have like to see Gattuso play

I watched it on ZDF too. Prefer the German commentators to the Brits. Yeah.. it was a pretty snoresville match.. Hopefully Brazil v Portugal will be better when they play.
