Received a harassing private message?

Mon Jan 07, 2008 5:58 pm

Over the past few months I've become aware of at least one user that has been creating new forum accounts with the sole purpose to send harassment PMs to random forum members. These e-mails are usually one sentence long with some form of profanity in them. If you've received such PMs but haven't told me, please do so, especially if they aren't from the following accounts:

Lx5500, Av3500, Utube545, or El3500 (These accounts and the IPs used to post from them have been banned already).

Please also let me know if you receive harassing PMs or e-mails from regular forum users and they don't stop upon request. I've banned several users in the past for failing to stop harassing other members. This is something that won't be tolerated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Under normal circumstances, I'd usually say that derfunk sent PMs soliciting sex but since this is a sensitive topic, I'd rather stfu.

Is it chakhay?

The banning continues: lz645. Someone is having a bit too much fun with proxies.

Are these PM's personal attacks, or just nonsensical ramblings of profanity?
For those that fought for it, freedom has a taste that the protected will never know.

Heh. That's actually kind of funny. Whose life is so pathetic that they send random profane private messages to people on forums?

That was my thought. I think I'd be far more likely to be amused than to feel harassed.

Are these PMs coming from any predictable IP ranges, or just from random proxies or something?

Got to be random or they would have been banned and forgot about a long time ago.

Well it could be random enough that banning them would work, but probably have a lot of collateral damage in the form of banning legitimate users. For instance, my posts might come from many different IPs (they don't in reality) but you could easily ban my ISP's range, but it would ban anyone that used my ISP or lived in my town. On the other hand if they are proxies, you're pretty much screwed as far as trying to stop them, as they will just switch to another proxy.

In the infamous Jessica Alba thread, Kevin said the spam posts were coming from all over. I believe he said they have banned some ranges that seem particularly problematic, but as long as their are pwned machines out there or open relay/proxies, it's going to continue to be a problem.

For these accounts that are sending PMs, the IPs all seem to be proxies.

If they are indeed from proxies, then it is reasonable to suspect it is from the same user or users from the same group.

I think the best means to deal with Rats are just ignore them.

And another: Hk680.

EDIT: Complaint generator posts have been split out to this thread. Let's keep this thread for actual reports of harassing PMs. Thanks.

"kz675" decided he's had it and sent me a number of troll PMs with certain expletives.

Don't understand the point of it all. 12 hours back, creates the account, sends harassing PMs to a (or many) member(s), and ends up getting banned. All over within 24 hours. So, what's the point? :S

It would be amusing to have a sort of virtualized TR message system, such that anybody signing up with a username fitting alpha-alpha-digit-digit-digit never has his messages delivered but instead gets responses randomly generated by the server to look like something vaguely insulting that appears to be coming from the user he mailed. He then responds to those, and around it goes in a little isolated circle of insanity, while no one else even notices (except perhaps the mods who get to watch this midget-vs-Eliza battle).

Instead of random, we could pick messages sent by others in that clan.

If you post the IPs of the proxies the person has been using, it may be possible to figure out if they are going to a particular site, then you could ban the IP ranges involved. Just a thought.
