graphics card for an older pc... again

Postposted on Mon Jul 18, 2005 11:51 pm

Wow this is my first time in the forums. I know this question is very similar to this post http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=30929 but it did not answer my question. Here is my computer:

Pentium 4 1.7ghz
Intel D850GB mobo (socket 423 grrrrr..)
1280 mb of rdram
Geforce 2 MX 400

I want to spend less than $100 on a graphics card. I am looking at a Geforce 6200 and want to know if it is a good choice. I have read that a Geforce 6600 offers better performance (obviously). But is it worth the extra $50? The motherboard is limited to 4X agp. Are there better choices (maybe ATI or an older geforce 5 series card)? Thanks in advance.

Radeon 9600Pro and 9600XT are probably the best performers for under $100. I would not purchase an NVidia-based card lower than the GeForce 6600.

I have been reading some reviews and the 9600XT looks like a good choice. I think I might go that route.

I just picked up an MSI 5200 for $34. I have no need for 3d-age. At Newegg.
