I could make use of soundstorm, but it isn't the priority. I've got two soundcards collecting dust already (A Fortissimo II and a Audigy 2 Value). I've pretty much settled on the NF7S v2, or the Epox.

Smart man..you cant go wrong with either board..the Abit has a few more features..but both are great.

Well, the Epox is also about $20 cheaper, and I'm cheap.

....And now the Epox is out of stock at Newegg.

Well, I guess I could wait...I still have about 5 1/2 months left in the sandbox. I'd hoped it wouldl be waiting for me when I get back stateside....

I know, I know....but the goal is to spend between $60-$90 to last me for another year. If I went socket 939, I'd have to buy a new board, a new processor, and most painfully, a new video card because I'd be insane not to go PCI-E. And my GF 6800 AGP is only a year old, so I just can't justify it.

The goal of this socket A board hunting is to replace a flaky old 333mhz FSB Nforce 2 board. I've got a good little mobile 2500 XP that likes to run at 2.4 ghz....not cutting edge at all compared to Athlon 64 or even some fast P4s, but still plenty fast. The all out upgrade will wait until late 2006/early 2007.

Yeah, I saw that one. The rebate makes it tempting, even though I don't usually go for rebates. But, it has a fan on the northbridge, and I hate fans on my northbridges <homer>they make me so mad<homer>

i know everybody likes the nf7, but ill say this.
i tried a nf2 shuttle, and it actually worked better for overclocking, higher OC less voltage, but i got a nf7 and donated my shuttle to my family.

the nf7 fan is pretty cheapo, if i leave my pc off for a while and start it back up the chipset fan makes bad noises.
also, nforce2 drivers are crap, dont ever use the hard drive drivers or you are asking for problems.
i thought it might have been a shuttle problem, so thats why i tried the nf7 tell the truth, but its not.

If I can't get the socket A board I want in January, then I'll just stick with my flaky old Asus AN78X board. It is not upgrade time for me.

The fan's been good and quiet so far on my board. If it bothers you that much, it wouldn't be too much trouble to stick on a larger passive heatsink.
