building an x2 for someone. Looking for reliable no-frills mobo. doesn't even have to be pci-e but that's fine if it is.

From another thread:
$69 ASRock 939Dual-SATA2. It is now the CHEAPEST PCI-e 939 mobo on Newegg - so it's a good idea, even if you're never going to use the AGP slot.

The Jetway 939GT2 is also pretty cheap, and is an nforce4 chipset to boot.
I bought the Ultra-G for around USD80, the STD (non Ultra) should be even cheaper.
EDIT: All nforce4 motherboards *should* be X2 compatible, but some may need a BIOS flash. nv claim that you can run an X2 chip in single core mode to perform the flash.
The Jetway manual states that it supports the X2 processor, although I don't have an X2 on hand to test it with

X2 3800 & Motherboard for $380. Not a bad deal at all. I just jumped on it. I'm a little nervous about ECS but I've heard that they have improved.

I wish someone would make one of these board with a chipset other than ULI's...it's a fantastic value and a heck of a great idea...but it's ULI. SiS I can do, but ULI scares me.

Well...
You could do an ATI RS480 northbridge, and still use the ULi southbridge. The AGP magic is in the southbridge, not the northbridge. ULi and ATI use the same HyperTransport link method to link their NB and SB.

If you're going to OC then that ECS board is not for you. If not, then the board will be fine.
