Best cool midrange card?

Postposted on Mon Nov 14, 2005 2:08 pm

A friend of mine has an amd64 3000+ in an antec aria. He is currently just using the onboard radeon xpress graphics, but wants to get a video card. I am however, worried about the temperature buildup in his aria. What would be a good cool running, mid range video card to get for him?

PCI-Express. Ive told him not to expect anything less than 150$ canadian. He might go higher, but he doesnt do FPS, so it would be wasted to get high end.

Cooler and cheaper, but may be starting to show their age if you turn up game settings:
- 6600
- 6600GT
- X800GT
- X800GTO
- X800

A bit better and also more expensive, but may cause more heat and the Aria PSU *may not* handle them properly:
- 6800 vanilla
- 6800GS
- X800XL
- X1600 series (forgot the letter suffix, doesn't really matter as they are practically not available yet)

Yeah, they will all be > CAN$150.

I installed my 6600GT last night. I cranked up the World of Warcraft settings and noticed a sizeable improvement. Bonus! Age of Empires III runs now. I hope this card can last me through Elder Scrolls IV at least.

How long do you expect I have before it's utterly obsolete?

It really depends on how low you are willing to accept in terms of resolution and eyecandies.

XFX 6600gt

or if dremel is your friend:

6800gs

If the person is not playing ANYTHING that would stress video capabilities, maybe he should get a 6200, or just some more ram.

Well I'm not a huge FPS person. But Age of Empires III ran like complete crap, like it wouldn't even use the DirextX 9.0c I had installed, so Starfalcon suggested it was time to upgrade. It had been maybe 3-4 years.

Hopefully I can get 3 more out of this one.

Go with the 6600GT, for the price you can't beat it, and it still runs AOE3 great for me.

What does he do then? Sounds like he might not need an upgrade at all.

He is right now addicted to Sacred Underworld, which shows a lot of slowdown in cities. Ive told him that he might just be better off adding more RAM, but i also cant guarantee that that will solve things like those slowdowns. Ive told him that i might be able to get ahold of a 512mb RAM stick to test out how much it improves his performance.
He likely wont be using it for that many games, though i might give him some old games like Warcraft 3, or Knights of the Old Republic. Nothing bleeding edge, but I think he would at least like a system that can play his mindless hack n' slash type rpgs well.
