There is BTX, and also SFF cases like the ones that use micro-ATX boards.

No. The two most common options aside from ATX are Micro ATX (smaller motherboard) and BTX (an ATX board mounted upside-down). A few rare systems will have Extended ATX boards, but that's most for multi-core systems with their processors on separate dies. ATX is by far the most common form factor, and a vast majority of heatsinks, cases, and components are designed to work with it.
Asus A8N32-SLI - AMD X2 4200+ @ 2.7GHz - 2 x 1GB Corsair PC-3500LL @ 266MHz, 3-3-3-6 - SLI 7800GTs @ 505/1206 - Corsair HX620 PSU - Cooler Master RC-690

The two great evils of system tuning: YMMV and IIRC.

No, but it's by far the most common option. There's extended ATX for server and multi-processor boards; there's micro-ATX for smaller form factor applications. There's mini-ITX for extremely compact (and low power) applications. There are a lot of custom boards used by Shuttle and the other SFF barebones mfrs. And then there's BTX, developed by Intel and mostly used by a few OEMs but rare in the DIY community. But ATX offers by far the widest set of choices.

Your selection of boards will be extremely limited should you decide not to go with ATX or microATX.

also as far as i know there are no BTX motherboards for amd . if you want amd BTX is pretty much ruled out . there are far more options for ATX than any other form factor no matter what processor your going to use .
