6200 or 9600 Pro

Sat Feb 11, 2006 4:59 pm

Hi I am trying to decide which video card to buy. Should I get the 6200 or the 9600 Pro with 128MB? If I do get the 6200, how much memory can it handle? Would 512MB be too much? I plan to get the version of 6200 without TC. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I asked specifically about the memory the 6200 could handle since I am well aware of the fact that slow or budget graphic cards cant handle lots of memory.

I was hesistant on which to pick because I saw the benchmark review by TR on the 6200 and it showed how well it could play games such as Doom 3 or Far Cry.

The 6600 with 256MB DDR2 is almost as good as a 6600GT and they're only ~$100.

Lol I also wish for a 6600. But my budget is $75 and therefore with $75 as the limit I could only find the 9600 Pro or 6200 on Newegg.

Thanks a lot LicketySplit!! By the way, if I unlock the extra pipelines in 6200, would it be better than the 9700Pro?

The 9700pro will blow away the 9600pro..so that should tell you something. No...the 6200 wont begin to keep up.

I see it's 64-bit memory interface...why no 256-bit memory? :o

That can't be right, can it? The Radeon 9700Pro has a 256-bit memory interface. The 128-bit memory interface is all that differentiates a Radeon 9500Pro from a Radeon 9700.

The 9500 Pro is an 8 pipe card.

I think that's the best video card deal I've ever seen to date. :o It almost makes me wish I was looking for an AGP card. Eh, no it doesn't.

Yeah, a google on the SKU comes up with all the sellers calling it 64bit. I never knew ATi made one.

Check Newegg's refurb page. Both times I tried I got pretty good deals.

When my GeForce 4200 died I went the cheap route and replaced it with a 128-bit Leadtek GeForce 6200. It's the non-turbo cache version, and it sports 128MB of RAM. I am, quite frankly, disappointed with the card. The 4200 ran just as well, only it lacked support for DirectX 9.

I would encourage you to look at some other offerings if you can find them within your budget. Good luck.

I have found that this Alastor 9700 pro in fact has 128-bit memory. Still better than the 9600 tho.

Basically it is a 9500 pro.
