well, though i am a better fan of nvidia, i'd go on the ati's, cause of the 512...
it will give you better performance on the 1280 front...
you'll just get a better deal per buck
though i'd chk how much the 7900gt costs, cause from what i understood its $300...

I think it depends on your local prices somewhat. Here in Canada the Nvidia cards are way cheaper. Even though ATI is a Canadian company, go figure...

I can get a 7900GT for the same price as a X1600 pro. Tough decision!

my buget is £300 in pounds sterling as i am in UK, the 7900GT is around £10 cheaper than the ATI card but what I really want to know is which would perfom better, has anyone seen a direct comparison between these 2 cards anywhere that they could link me to. I am almost tempted to get the ATI card like you say for the 512 RAM but then that rules out a Dual GPU system in the future unless ATI and Nvidia open up their drivers. I shall await more opinions and thankyou for yours.

also thanx spiritwalker i wish my decision was that easy.

if you can get the 7900gt, then i think there isnt a question
although it has "only" 256mb, a. you'll have a better chance for sli in the future, and its cheaper...
b. its newer, in a generation, and till now, from the benchis i saw, its faster then the 7800GTX, so...
really, no question :)

I'd go with the ATI card. The frame rates between the two cards will probably be neglible (+/- 3% or 4%?). The x1800 has an advantage in its encoding/decoding capabilities. I believe Nvidia is close, but not nearly at the level ATI is at.
No matter how bad the new homepage sucks or how bungled the new management is...

ok i have done some reasearch and the 7900GT goes like this £258.44 works @ 475mhz core and has 256mb of 1360Mhz 256bit mem and has 24 pipes

the ATI card: X1800XT running @ 625 core w 256mb of 1500Mhz 512bit mem has 16 pipes and is also £258.44.

I am leaning towards the extra 8 pipes on the 7900 but peeps say that ATI's piplines are more effcient because they have more pixel\vertex shaders.

it is still a touch decision.

Please consider that there are other things then pipelines too! Like ROP's, nVidia and Ati both have 16, but Ati's having a way higher clock! Also I had a 7800GTX and wasnt really happy with the image quality, the speed was good, but the image quality was very bad IMO . I heard many other people about it too, I dont know if its solved already, but I dont think so .

So I sold it and bought the X1800XT, and Im very happy with it. Also I think the chance is very very high you get the new revision PCB (with 6 MOSFETS) so you'll be able to OC the card to atleast 700/800 from stock (625/750). So thats actually a X1800XT PE, but YMMV . I would definately go for X1800XT, also because of 512MB.

Thankyou all for your input , i have just read the article
http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2006q1/geforce-7600-7900/index.x?pg=1
and in most cases the 7900GT comes out on top compared to the X1800XT but i am unsure if this card has 256 or 512 mem, i'm gonna see if i can find find an image quality comparison somewhere before making my final decicion.

Each card comes with a plus. The 7900GT is generally faster in games that Nvidia excells in (OpenGL, Flight Simulators) and has much better support for its dual GPU configuration or SLI. It also runs quieter and takes much less power than the ATi. The x1800XT has the 512MB of memory, which will become an advantage in the future, and has the ability to use both AA and HDR lighting at the same time. It is generally faster in games that ATi excells in such as F.E.A.R. and Half-Life 2. However, its dual GPU support is not nearly as good as Nvidia's. As I am not a fan of dual GPUs and like having extra memory on my cards I would go with the ATi, but if you are looking for a similarly performing card that is also silent and does not draw so much power go with the Nvidia.

thankyou for you mix of opinions, I have decided I am to go for the 7900GT for a number of reasons firstly the perormance in current games and the lower power consumption, quietness , SLI capability as I have an SLi chipset and I upgrade quite frequently so a second card option would be good also I can upgrade to a newer generation card with more memory later. also the 7900GT wins the google fight.

thanx for your help guys.
