Welcome to TR!

And the answer is yes; but many questions remain, such as, what games do you want to play, and what is your budget?

We need to know the form factor you're aiming for. A quiet HTPC or a regular mid-tower PC?
i5 2500K @ 4.6GHz / Cooler Master V8 / Asus P8P67 Evo / 8GB G.skill DDR3-1600 / Zotac GTX 780 3GB / Seasonic S12-650 / Samsung 850pro 256GB SSD / Corsair 600T Graphite / those cheap 1440p Korean monitors

yep ive read the system guide more than once from start to finish and will probably go with the double stuff high end model with a few changes like no solid state drives im looking for a high end biuld but not a noise monster not so high end that i have to put it in its own room with industrial air conditioning to keep it from over heating

my biggest questions are can i use my led tv as a monitor i believe i can and thing like whats the best networking card i have Wifi where i am so i need a network card with the strongest reception best reception i also believe in paying more for high end base component than normal
things like getting the obsidian tower for a case and a high end gigabyte motherboard i think i like Nvidia graphics cards better but i dont know why so ill probably buy a medium grade card and wait for them to come out with some thing new i dont play a lot of games but the game i will be playing the most would be flight sims and am looking forward to star trek online

also if i follow most of the guide lines for the biulds on this site than does that insure good possibility of components matching up

I just bought a 32" Samsung LED TV (3d) to use as my new computer monitor. I'm having some problems:

My computer has become really slow and laggy with the monitor
The image just isn't as sharp at all. Like when searching on goolge i cant see the text clearly that under the search titles.
Running on a 1920x1080 resolution just makes the screen too big for the monitor (like it doesnt fit)

My specs are:

Core i7 2600K sandy Bridge
GTX 570
8GB ram

Im pretty sure its not my PC. Am i just using a really slow monitor of some sort? Or do i need to install some sort of drivers for this to work? My computer just feels really slow and laggy

Jorden, you are probably talking about overscan with the picture is too big for the monitor thing. Somewhere in the Nvidia control panel there should be a setting to adjust overscan settings.

As to your computer being really slow with the TV plugged in, are you using drivers from Nvidia's webpage or just what came with windows?

EDIT------

You should try downloading the latest drivers from Nvidia if you are not sure or know you're just using the windows ones.

i have to review a lot of large scanned documents at work. it is typical for me to review a 250 scanned pdf of a legal filing. i got sick of reviewing it on my laptop so i plugged in a 32 LCD TV using a vga cable so i could read two pages at a time. i set the resolution to 1080 on my lenovo t420. i turned off the switchable graphics and just used the ati graphics card. i found the flicker or refresh rate was so bad on the monitor that i got a headache and felt nauseous. i suspect that cheap tv's do not make good monitors.

this will be my next monitor: http://www.microcenter.com/product/384780/EQ276W_27-Inch_IPS_LED_Monitor,_WQHD_2560x1440,_HDMI,_DVI-D,_DisplayPort,_USB

Jorden, I think your subjective feel of lag and sluggishness is due to the high input lag of the TV - I have personally experienced this myself. They simply weren't made with this usage in mind and therefore have significantly higher input lag compared to purpose-built monitors. As for the lack of sharpness - overscan is indeed the issue, search for an option of "Just Scan" or "Scan Only" or something similar in the TV settings, also search the Nvidia control panel for the same options. ;)

The obvious is to look for a "Game" mode for the input.

TV's make great monitors, as long as you account for their limitations and have an applicable use case. Cheap TV's are usually better as well if you can get one with minimal processing. Keep the input lag down and calibrate the colors on the PC side and you're golden.

Another thing I would recommend to anyone using a TV as a monitor is to be sure your TV will accept the resolution you want to use (go native!) at the correct refresh rate (normally 60hz for a TV).

I discovered this issue with my 32inch Panasonic "720p" TV. I randomly decided to check the specs on my TV and found that its native resolution is actually 1368 x 766. Great, I just got a "free" bump in resolution. However, when I went into Catalyst Control Center I found that the refresh rate would drop to 30hz when I upped the resolution to 766p over HDMI. A quick check of the manual showed that I needed to use VGA to get 766p at 60hz. Easily done. Now everything looks much crisper even though it was only a small bump in resolution.

Moral of the story is to check the TV's manual to be sure you can get the resolution you want at the refresh rate you want. Other than that, as other have said, turn on "Game" mode and disable any other post-processing stuff your TV may have to get the best results.
