new Sandybridge build

Wed Jan 19, 2011 10:24 pm

Hello everyone. First off, I really like Tech Report, after reading the boards for a few months, it seems everyone has some really good knowledge and advice.

What I am looking for is a budget minded Sandybridge build for gaming, something obviously a few steps above what I currently have (see bottom of post)

Here is what I am thinking of building
i5 2400 and MB combo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.575902)
Coolmaster Hyper 212 Plus (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103065) *UPDATE*
Arctic Silver Ceramique (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835100009) *UPDATE*
Gskill RipjawX PC3 1280 4 Gb (2x2 Gb) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231427) *UPDATE*
ASUS Ati 6850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121419) *UPDATE*
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1Tb (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152185)
an antec 300 case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811129042),
I already have a good power supply that should be fine for this (http://www.provantage.com/corsair-cmpsu ... SMC05H.htm is what I got and where i got it a couple years back).
all for $660 on Newegg.

Possibly thinking of cutting back to an i3 2120 (Haven't been able to find these for sale yet),
or
an Ati 5770 (maybe like this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product) to cut costs...

Right now the monitor i have is a crappy 1280x1024 max resolution LCD monitor, that was free and still works great, though I plan on an upgrade (maybe next years tax return)

What I am upgrading from, just for your information.
Intel C2D e4400 (Oced to 3Ghz)
2 Gb ddr2 Kingston valueram
Abit ip 35-E motherboard
Diamond Ati HD 3850
some 160Gb HD

If you're not going to overclock, a H67 board will be fine. i3s aren't out for a month.

I'll probably end up going w/ a i5-2400 (since it's only $10 more than a i5-2300 for 300 mhz), a lower-end H67 (like one of the Intels in a NewEgg combo, since that takes $20 off the mobo/CPU) and 4 GB (maybe 8, depends on budget) myself.

The P8H67-M LE costs $5 more than the LX, but it has 4 DIMM slots for memory and it has USB3.

LX has no HDMI port, either, on top of the lack of USB 3.0.

(I've been doing way too much studying of the lower-end H67 boards)

I'm not worried about my MB having any video ports, since I will have Video card with what I need.

If i go with this combo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.575902) i can cut an additional $20 off.

*Updated original post to include this combo, and an Asus 6850)

So, I'm, considering upgrading to 8Gb of memory. Which set should I get?

I noticed these, (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231424) do you think they would be compatible?

Or maybe these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231308) I know the heat spreaders on ram are almost worthless.

Stay away from PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066) memory. You want either PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) for a new computer system.

Why not just stick with what you have a little longer, maybe get a Q9550 CPU and/or the HD6850 to go with it? A Sandy Bridge rig wouldn't really be that appreciably faster.

Since this won't be an overclocked system, that set should be fine.

Just pick a well-regarded name-brand (G. Skill has a pretty good rep), something that runs at a standard 1.5v (check), DDR3 1333 (check) and call it a day. If you're not going to mess with memory settings, no need to over-think things.

If I wasn't getting BSODs from my video card overheating, and other odd issues... I just might have kept going. But with needing a new VC, and probably a new MB, might as well rebuild...

Thanks for the help everyone, I decided what I will order. (When I get my tax return)

Went back to 4Gb of Ram, and decided to get a hyper 212 plus heatsink fan and some paste stuff.

Looks good!

I sort of deviated from my original plan from earlier in the thread, too, since I found a good one-off deal on a 2500K.
For $337 shipped, ended up with:
Intel 2500K
4 GB of Mushkin DDR 1333 (big heatsinks are a no-no with my Mugen 2)
ASRock H67M-GE

I bought the memory first during the 15% off RAM sale, and that sloooooow Egg Saver shipping is going to mean it's the last to arrive

Ok, since the recallish thing, I am obviously putting this build off until the new chipset comes out. In that case, will any of the components listed, work for my Abit IP35-E Motherboard (Specifically the video card, i know that the ram/cpu isn't compatible)?

Sure, any PCIe graphics card should work fine with your motherboard. Is your Radeon HD3850 not adequate at the low resolution of your monitor?

Its mostly the fact that i have to run a fan into my case to prevent my 3850 from overheating. I was thinking that i could get my VC, and then just play the wait and watch prices until i can get a motherboard in.

The 6850 would help in a few games performance too, though it would likely be bottle-necked because of my CPU. I was 99% sure that the new VC would be compatible, but thought I could check.

Have you looked for evil dust bunnies in your video card's cooler?

I did think of that, but haven't done a thorough check. If I wasn't going to rebuild, I was planning on taking it apart, cleaning and reseating it and my CPU.

Beside the video card, you could certainly use the HDD, too. It's going to certainly be quite a bit faster than your 160GB HD, and your motherboard has four SATA II ports.

Yeah. Found this on Newegg's daily deal list.

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL $104.99
$15 off promo code EMCKHKJ23, ends 02/07

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231428

Decided to put the order through, what I could get anyways. The motherboard/CPU might change in the future, but the rest won't.

$90 for 8 GiB of PC3-12800 sounds like a great deal, but who knows how much lower memory prices could go in the next two months?

Yeah, I agree with your logic, I really SHOULD have waited... I guess when the new chipsets come out, I will find out if i overpaid on anything... it is very possible and likely. Thanks for you input!

Congratulations, now you really need a better graphics card :D I'm seeing GTX470 and Radeon HD 5850 prices fall through the roof, any one of those would be a better bet than the 6850 at this point until they're all sold out.

Well, here I am bumping my old thread. I finally have the funds (or will on the 12th which is my bday) to finish this rebuild. Good thing too, since my current PC isn't posting. :-(

I have decided on an i5 2500K and an asrock pro3 motherboard. I am typing this on my wife's iPod touch, or I would include links. Thinking of replacing my psu at the same time since it has been in use since this time in '08. Any recommendations? Maybe the gold rated rosewill brand one? Not sure.
