First build, few questions

Postposted on Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:27 pm

Hey Guys, first time build, with a budget of 900 ish including windows
I want it to play shogun 2 tw and the total war after it with all the bells and whistles-and this machine should get me through college...so 6 years out I hope it will still be viable
cpu i5 2500k- $229.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115072
mobo ASUS P8Z68-V LE- $132.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131773
gpu GIGABYTE 6950- $239.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125385
psu SeaSonic M12 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151093
ram Patriot 8gb- $34.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820220570
hdd HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 750GB- $99.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145532
win 7 hp 64 bit oem
asus dvd drive
I already have a case(haf 922) a monitor(1080p) and a hyper 212+ cooler
so will the win 7 oem be re-installable? I hope it is, would hate to have to purchase new each time something happens
Should I wait for 28nm gpu's and or Ivy Bridge?-I'm running on a p4 2.8 and a Nvidia 6800, it really cant play games at all, so I thought it best to just go ahead and build

That's pretty close to the system I built last fall, I think you'll last a while with that one. My only suggestions are to just go ahead and buy the 16GB of RAM and be done with it, and also, you might want to look into a BluRay combo drive (BRD-ROM + DVD-RW).

Your future upgrade options will then be another video card, possibly another CPU, and either a small SSD for enabling Smart Response caching with the Z68 chipset, or a much larger SSD converted to your primary boot drive with the 750GB unit moved out to storage duty.

Do you need Microsoft Office H&S on this machine? If so, mark out another $100 of your budget for that.

Everything looks great. What idk much about is that Antec PSU, that's why i'd recommend the following:

Also don't know much about the Deskstar HDD, i think i heard a few good reviews in the past but i'm not sure. Thing is that it might vibrate and be annoying in general (worst case scenario besides being defective) so if it does prove "noisey" return it and ask your money back and buy a different brand/model.

I would lose the HDD and get a ~120GB SSD. If you need more storage, use an old hard drive. Wait for HDD prices to drop in a few months, then buy a new storage hard drive. You can survive for a few months. $99 for less than a terabyte is obscene. 2TB drives were easily had for (less than) that price only a few months ago.

You also might want to consider using Sandy Bridge's integrated graphics for a few months until the new GPUs come out. Compared to your 6800, it should still be an upgrade. For a gamer, Ivy Bridge isn't worth the wait, but 28nm GPUs are.

Best of luck on your build!

If you're a college student (or will be), then you'll probably be able to get Windows for free, and you'll also probably have an opportunity to get MS Office very cheap. You're build looks solid.

I wouldn't worry too much about waiting for Ivy Bridge - the new thing is usually just around the corner. Coming from a P4 system, anything you buy today is going to be a huge, huge step up, and a 2500K setup will last years.
