Ah, I can't wait to finally retire the Socket 939 X2 and move out of the last decade! Few more months...

That was nearly what I upgraded from last fall (S939 Opteron 180). But then I got an HTPC itch and rebuilt it to run Win7-64 Home and XBMC. Works quite well.

Yeah I hate to put such a great stable system to rest, but I plan to get back into gaming some, and that's just not going to cut it. I started on my bachelor's in 2009, and I didn't want to go through the hassle of upgrading until I was done with classes (come on, September!!!). I am SO out of the loop... the only things I know for sure is that I will have at least 1 PCI slot for my sound card, I plan to go with Intel for the first time since the Pentium 3, and I'll likely stick with nvidia for graphics.

Oh... and Windows 7 for sure! :P

This is a great thread. Essentially the OP was just looking for a "good for you" type comment and instead got his build choices torn apart by the gerbils. Moral of the story would be to consult system builders anonymous BEFORE your build next time and save some money.

...None the less, I have to say your post is QFT-worthy.

What does "QFT" mean?

To clarify, we had "nearly" the same system, not that I "nearly" upgraded. I did build 80% of a new machine for my desktop (Core i5), but the old S939 system proved entirely adequate for HTPC use, so I obtained the remaining 20% as a mix of parts-on-hand, used equipment from the Bargain Basement, and a couple Newegg and Amazon purchases.

But I think you /do/ need a "Z" board to do this - can't do any adjusting at all with an "H" board - correct?

True fact.
