Continuous restart issue new build...

Postposted on Tue Sep 04, 2012 11:29 pm

Hello there. I have a sort of new/old build my girlfriend and I have been working on for a while now. I have been gathering some older but still useful parts and teaching her how to build her computer.

Anywho, the issue I have is that after we put all the parts together and started the machine up, it won't post but continuously restarts. I have tried reseating the RAM, GPU, case fans, CPU fan, etc. with no luck.

The build is as follows:
Motherboard: DFI Lanparty P45 Micro-ATX socket LGA 775
CPU: intel Core2 Quad Q6600
CPU Cooler: Stock Intel Core2 Quad fan and heats ink
HDD: Western Digital 500 GB
RAM: 2 x 2 GB OCZ DDR2 1066 MHz
PSU: Corsair CX430 430w
Case: Dynex Mid-ATX tower
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 220
Wireless card: linksys PCI wireless n

Any thoughts?

I had the same issue on my computer. Turned out to be faulty RAM. Take them out and replace them one at a time till it POSTs and boots.

Had the same issue on a new build a few months ago - the system didn't POST properly and just endlessly cyclying through a power up, fan starting, tried to POST, then a couple of seconds later power cut out, then powered up .....

Turned out, for me, to be a bad (new) CPU. Pretty rare. Afraid your going to need to swap in a spare CPU or maybe RAM to isolate the problem.

Older systems used to have different types of POST "beeping" to help you diagonise problems, but not sure if that still exists on more modern motherboards.

Tried swapping out the RAM.

Also tried booting with just CPU and RAM installed, no case fans, no gpu, no hdd, etc.

Tested PSU, its fine, reset jumpers to clear CMOS and make sure jumpers were set to FSB 1066 for the Core2 Quad Q6600

Same symptoms...

Was this motherboard "new old stock" or is it used? If used, how certain are you that it is not damaged, and has a BIOS that is compatible with the CPU you're installing? Examine the board closely for any bulging/leaking capacitors.

I suggest testing all of the components in another motherboard if possible...

It was used, but prior to being installed in this system, it was working perfectly. The board is compatible with the CPU, though I don't know about the BIOS because it won't get as far as POSTing.

Check the seating of the CPU heatsink?

CPU heatsink is fine, I think I narrowed it down to the CPU, which sucks, but I am going to swap it out for a Core2 Duo I have lying around somewhere.

It could be virtually anything, from a shorted out motherboard that isn't mounted quite straight, to bad cards, badly seated cards or memory, bad CPU, bad power supply...

My recommendation in this situation is to remove everything from the case and place the motherboard on the motherboard box. Put in one stick of memory, the CPU and heatsink, the video card if you don't have integrated, and obviously the power supply. If it POSTs like this, try putting in the rest of the RAM and running memtest86+ for at least 12 hours (a single pass doesn't cut it, though if this is a memory problem it's likely more severe). If that passes, plug the hard drive back in and run a CPU burn in like Prime95 for a few hours. Then start inserting cards one at a time until it fails, which pretty well tells you it's either that part or the power supply. If nothing fails, try again inside the case.

If the minimal parts fails, try the RAM in a different slot, and then the other stick of RAM in yet another slot. If that's not it, don't swap the CPU until you try another power supply, because if it's a bad motherboard or PSU you have a chance of frying another CPU or motherboard. If not the power supply, if at all possible see if you can get your hands on another motherboard from a friend, and try that. Finally the CPU. Do these last couple steps with the new PSU, because you still haven't ruled out the PSU frying other components.

Don't rush it, because you could end up destroying more components.

Well I threw in a Core2 Duo E7600 and it fired right up. Is there something I have to do to configure the board to accept the quad core?

It'll be wanting a BIOS update. Go to the website for DFI, find your exact board, and get the latest BIOS. Follow the instructions to the letter.

Good luck with that, DFI got out of the consumer motherboard business several years ago. Hopefully it is still on their site somewhere.

The consumer support site is still there and appears to have last been updated in mid-2010. If you Google the exact model name it should come up.
