Time to do my first build based on System Guide. When will the next one arrive?

What do you need and what is your budget? For the most part, TR forum members got the specs quite close to the system guide prior to it being posted.

The most recent systems guide came out August 16, so it's just slightly over 2 months old. As there really hasn't been that much new hardware released or that many new price drops, it's still pretty current.

There will be some pretty major price drops on at Christmas time, so I would think you might see a new systems guide in December sometime.

Yes, use the previous one, it is still pretty much up-to-date.

The old system guide is still a good source of info. TR's system guides come out once every two or three months, so we'll probably get another one around the middle of November in time for the holidays.

Yeah, the TR Gerbils will give you an up-to-date system guide that is personalized to your specific needs any time you want. In addition to budget, make sure to give as much personal usage info as possible to keep recommendations on target.

Should be out later this week!

The only major change I can see coming is replacing the 660 Ti in the Sweet Spot with a plain ol 660, and maybe moving up to the i5-3570K with the leftover budget.

I expect that if one pops later this week there will be changes in the cheaper builds. Ivy Bridge i3s for the primary config and Trinity as an alternate. The higher builds are still pretty current.

There isn't any left over. The Sweet Spot in the last guide was grossly over its stated budget. Saving $90 on the graphics card is a good start, but it's not even halfway there.

TR's System Guide wrote:
Those builds have target budgets of $600, $900, $1,500, and around $3,000. Within each budget, we will attempt to hit the sweet spot of performance and value while mentally juggling variables...
The $900 build came in at $1137.90 + $19.64 shipping. :(

If they save $90 on the graphics card by replacing the GeForce GTX660Ti with a GTX660 as you suggested and $60 by eliminating the Xonar DSX sound card, they could just call it a $1000 budget.

My build will need to accommodate the following, nothing exotic.
1.Trimming and splicing clips of the following formats in to a single video using Premiere Elements 11.
MPEG (Sony DSC-W55)
MPEG2 (Sony DVD-108)
MOV (Canon S95)
MP4/H.263/WMV (LG Octane)
2. Photo editing with Photoshop Elements 11.
3. iTunes for music, podcasts, books on CD.
4. Firefox through a Verizon 4G aircard.
5. Quicken
6. Windows 7 64 bit OS.
7. Scanning photos, negatives & slides with a Canoscan 9000F.
8. Link with current XP machine (Intel Prescott processor from 2005) moved to a metal building 200 feet away through CAT5 underground cable in conduit. I'd like internet access at the old PC through the new PC with the Verizon aircard, don't have any idea how that's done.

Existing hardware to re-use:
1. LG 37LC2D-UD monitor through HDMI. (provide for future dual monitor setup)
2.ZEOS KB-6251/2 mechanical keyboard w/AT to P/S2 adapter
3. HP 5610 AIO
4.Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers

So far the only component I know I want is a Cooler Master HAF 922 case. The rest I need help with primarily for making sure I get components that are compatible with each other and the applications I intend to use. Also I'd like at least 16MB of Ram.

Just for the sake of discussion lets call the hardware budget @ $1000.

What about gaming?

Yeah, in fact the only thing on that list worth mentioning is Elements 11. If you're a casual/moderate Elements user, you could get by with a quad core Intel i5-3470, 16GB of RAM, and no discrete GPU. You're probably looking at a $500-600 system at this point.
HAF 922 for $80
i5-3470 for $200
16GB RAM for $80
mobo for ~$70-90 (your choice, this is just an example)
430W PSU for $70 or 450W for $45

Asus P8Z77-M Pro or P8Z77-V LK are my motherboard recommendations.
128GB or 256 GB Samsung 830 are my SSD recommendations.
3 TB Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 is my hard-drive recommendation.

Is that specific enough?

I would like Intel to get off their arses and do something in the CPU arena. The current crop of E5s and i7s is collecting dust and spider webs. I have work to do and would like to see a new round of price cuts or updates, or SOMETHING.

Great suggestions, I like that P8Z77-M Pro.

That's exactly what I need to know to proceed. Forgot about a DVD burner optical drive, and still not sure how to get the 2 PC's linked.

Looks good to me.
And lastly the network. Windows 7 machine w/Verizon UML 290 linked through @150' of CAT 5 cable to an XP machine. I'd like internet access at the XP machine mostly for web browsing, doesn't have to be fast enough for on line video viewing. What additional hardware and software would I need to do this?

Can't you just use Windows' built-in internet connection sharing?

Thanks for the link, I have no doubt that that's the way to do it, but again, I've never done this before and I need specific, compatible hardware part numbers for each machine. Internal/external adapters, routers, connectors for the cable, etc. I have the book " Windows 7 Inside And Out" that I'll use along with help from you guys to get it working once it's all together.

Considering the frequency at which TR releases the guides and the stagnant industry of late, you could almost definitely buy what's on the last guide and miss nothing.

It's really as easy as running a crossover cable (a 'straight' cable, easy enough to make) between the machines, and putting their respective adapters on the same network*. Internet Connection Sharing can do the rest.

*IP space, that is; 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102 work great, use 255.255.255.0 for the network mask on both, and leave the rest on automatic.

I'm @ 1.5 hours away from the Westmont IL store. That's where I intend to get what I need for this project.

Since adapter part numbers are not forthcoming, I'll ask for this hardware requirement in a different way.

The Asus P8Z77-V LK motherboard I'll be using has an RJ45 port.
The Intel D915GAGL motherboard in my current PC has an RJ45 port.

Does the crossover cable go between those two ports?

Will the Windows 7 ICS work with the XP machine connected that way?
