Help Building a New system with Boxing Sales

Wed Dec 26, 2012 2:19 pm

Hey Folks,
So i’m looking to build myself a new gaming rig and I’m using the editor’s pick from the 2012 buyer’s guide as a baseline for power/cost levels. I’m looking to take advantage of the various boxing week sales that are going on though to potentially bring down costs. I’m in the process right now of doing the drudge work (edit: literally as you read this) of comparing and contrasting different components and their sale costs. I’ll be posting thoughts and options as I find them, but of course there is a clock ticking on these sale so I figured that I will throw this post up right now in case anyone is either doing the same thing as me or has suggestions off the top of their head.

So once again, I'm looking to get similiar performance as the system posted below, but want to take advantage of Boxing sales to cut some costs

Any comments or suggestions welcome

Welcome to the Tech Report!

Your choices look fine to me. The Corsair Obsidian case is quite large and expensive. You might find a smaller or less expensive case that you would also like.

Yeah, what JAE said. I don't know what price range of cases you're looking for but maybe check out the Corsair Carbide 300R (review here) or the Fractal Design R4 if you prefer a quieter case (review here).

Thanks for the comments re: cases, i'm looking into them now

I have two questions
First regarding Graphics cards
Compared to MSI N660Ti PE 2GD5

The MSI N660TI-2GD5/OC runs $40 cheaper after rebate.
The main difference between the two seems to be the lack of Twin Frozr on the TI-2. I dont plan to overclock the card, just to run my games at max settings, is the extra cash worth it for the TwinFrozr with my needs?

Second (and apologies if this is a rookie question), I have access to two older 500Gb HDD from a previous build. If I opt use these instead of the Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB what are my drawbacks other than possibly more noise and higher heat; are they worth it to save the $89?

Thanks

You'll probably lose a small amount of transfer speed and maybe some slightly longer seek times but you'll more than make up for it by using an SSD as your primary. The other drawback that I can think of is the potentially increased likelihood of failure due to age. Not saying they will, but just something to keep in mind. Just make sure you have backups and you should be fine... not that having an F3 is really any excuse to NOT have backups .
