i7 4770K Overheating? BIOS Message and OCCT Results Inside

Postposted on Sun Sep 29, 2013 11:01 am

So a buddy of mine just put together a build two days ago. And he went to run Farcry 3 and about 10 minute sin his BIOS popped up a CPU overheating message. Stock heatsink, stock speed. No overclocking.

So then I had him run OCCT and he got this:

CPU LINPACK TEST RESULTS

CPU:OCCT TEST RESULTS

Does he have a bad CPU? Does he need to try resetting the heatsink? Is it possibly the motherboard?

Here are his stats:

I7 4770K (at stock speed)
Asus Z87-A
Kingston Hyper Blue DDR3 1600MHZ RAM
Gigabit Radeon 7970 GHZ
Shinobi XL ATX Case
Corsair 600W Modular Power Supply

Reseat the heatsink, it's probably not making good contact.

Does he need to go get thermal paste to do that?

Right now he is just using the factory applied stuff that came on the heatsink.

Yes, he would have to get new thermal paste. It's not very expensive to get some arctic silver thermal paste (it's what I use).
