Unbelievable deal on the PII 840

Postposted on Tue Aug 16, 2011 8:16 pm

Those lucky enough to live close to a microcenter right now can get $80 off ANY mother board with the purchase of Phenom 2 840.Seeing how microcenter already sells the 840 at the low low price of $89.99 this means when combined with a low cost board you can theoretically get the 840+mobo for as low as $49.99 new.Or if you more picky about your MB"S you can get TR"s system guide recommended Asus M5A97 +the 840 for only $134.98+tax. WOW

I clicked on the link in excitement, only to be let down that it was a Phenom II and not a legacy Pentium II. Then I was happy that the Phenom II was so cheap, so a net gain in happiness is good! :D

This is how I got my P2 x2 (unlocked to 4 cores @ 3.6ghz) + Motherboard for $45. I bought 8gb of DDR3, a 1TB Samsung drive and a GTX460 1gb for under $400 total with a Coolermaster case and power supply.

And if you want a little future-proofing, you can get the ASRock 880G Pro3 Socket AM3+ with the 840 for $150+tax. Pretty cool with a MB that can has drop in BD support.

You know the M5A97 is AM3+ as well, right? AMD 970, 900 series chips only ship on AM3+ boards (not to say that AM3+ only have 900 series chips, just that 900-series chips are automatically AM3+ boards)
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.

Either I misread the entry or they had a typo that said it was AM3. I did not realize that all 970 board only ship as AM3+. Now I do. I love Microcenter's prices on certain items, but I really wish that they would clean up the website interface. Of course they aren't as large as a NewEgg, so maybe it isn't the top priority. A chain of 22 brick-and-mortar stores probably doesn't have the web resources, or focus, of the second-largest online-only retailer.

I guess that's the main difference with the 9xx board? The silicon for the board is otherwise the same as the 8xx series?
