not to bad, would a tower heat-sink be less than ideal for a case that will be moved a few times in its lifetime?

As long as it doesn't see any sharp jolts it should be fine; if it's going to get any kind of abuse that would make you worry about the hard drives, you should probably consider removing the heat sink too. (At least compared to hard drives there's no chance of data loss, and in this case the worst you'd be out is $20)

It screws through the motherboard into a metal backplate. That's about as secure as a heatsink can be made.

It's more the torquing/crimping of the heatpipes by the heatsink mass that I worry about. Nothing sadder than a slumped-over HSF (though I've only seen that in photos, a crimped heatpipe would be no fun either).
