The thread was originally about a $229 at Amazon price which was up from $199 a few hours earlier, but the Egg still has it at $199 apparently!

I wonder if SSD prices will plateau considerably above mechanical drives or if they'll eventually reach $/GB parity...

Once mechanical HDD prices finish their gradual decline over the next few months, I think SSDs will continue to plateau quite a bit higher.

One reason why some SSDs are seeing price cuts is because new controllers are coming out soon. Marvell has come out with a new controller recently, making the one in the M4 somewhat dated (though it is still quite a good drive and more than enough for most uses) and Crucial may be trying to get rid of M4 stock before releasing the successor.

I have to have discipline and hold out until next year... the good news is that even better deals will be available by then.

Wow! That's a really good deal. I paid $150 for a 128GB drive not even a year ago. I definitely would've ponied up another $50 for double the capacity.

Strangely enough, you can still buy the drive for $199 at Amazon. The $229 unit featured on the main page is "sold by Beach Camera", but click the link "XX new from $197" and the very first entry in the list of alternate vendors is the Amazon drive for $199.
