I don't know exactly how 'hot' this is, but the coupon for today is a 20% off coupon code (EMCJJNH23) for WD Caviar Green drives, sizes 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB. This makes the 2TB drive, for instance, $88. I want to jump on buying 3 of them for a file server, but I'm tentative that they might go even cheaper at some point soon.

Anyone know a time when it's been cheaper?

Edit: Typo. It's $88 not 86, sorry. Also, it seems it's also on the front page!

I bought my 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 for $60 a year ago or more. 86 for a 2TB drive is more than reasonable.

86$ eh? Finally - I paid 85$ for a WD green over 12 months ago - we're almost back to normal gents.

Well, I decided to go for it. Ordered 3 of 'em. Instant 4TB RAID-5 array in the making.

Except the warranty has decreased and the most recent comments on both the WD Green and Samsung Spinpoint were getting negative. :-?

Is it still 3 year or back to 1 (again!? sigh)
I can understand if the delicate equipment was flooded and the whole building needed a refresh, that is a huge amount of work to get the lines back up and running and smoothly / perfectly.

Neither. Looks like the warranty on the greens is 2 years now.

Anyone know if the Greens still have the head unload timer thrash issue when used in Linux systems? I will be needing to upgrade my home server soon, and I still trust WD more than Seagate (modulo the head unload timer thing). With prices back down and drive reliability as questionable as its ever been, I may go for RAID-6 this time around. The extra redundancy doesn't just give extra protection against errors during an array rebuild; it provides some insurance against operator error (swapping out the wrong drive after a failure).

I'm more of a RAID-10 kinda guy. Gives a lot of the same assurances (as long as you don't get the other drive in the same mirror), and the extra performance. But yeah, I don't run any of my desktop systems without RAID of some sort anymore (mirrored on the desktop, RAID-10 on the servers).
