Good thing you signed your username at the bottom of your post. We would have been confused otherwise.

Who wrote that witty reply to the OP? I can't tell because the person didn't sign their name!

BTW, I was looking into some of these drives. Worth it to buy and just crack the case open and use as regular SATA drives? Anyone try that out?

The drive inside the case appears to be a ST3000DM001

in my experience they try use older generation disks where possible in the externals.

I have a seagate USB 3.0 drive that the internals is a SATA2 interface (according to the diag tools)
That said I have a USB 3.0 from WD that the inside is a WD Black...

That said, 3TB have been out over a year but there has been no huge leap forward in technology.
I'd say worth a risk.

Yes, I did that. It works BUT the ones I did had a LOT of clicking (high sleep rate?).
Also could not update firmware. Seagate updater would not recognize them.

Once they are out of the case they show more then one partition. I reformated mine.
Have not tried to use the old enclosure as a general USB drive dock yet.
So don't know if just any drive or partition structure will function.

Good luck,
