Seasonic X650 Shellshocker $80

Fri May 03, 2013 4:56 pm

I've been looking at PSUs for the past few weeks and noticed this popped up today. If you're looking for a new PSU this is a pretty good deal. It's on Newegg for $80 with MIR and free shipping. Otherwise it's a 650w quiet gold rated modular psu with Seasonic build quality, which pretty much hits all the marks. Reading some reviews it has a hybrid silent mode too which turns off a fan below a certain threshold and it's quiet even when under high load. The only downside to the PSU appears to be the coil whine whine 1 in 20 posts point out, which is something I'd be leery of. I'm not sure if that's because people don't notice it or it's a component failure.

Should have waited!

How "just"? You might be able to get a reimbursement.

Got one of these for my build in 2011. Never had any trouble with coil whine (and I'm very sensitive to that sort of sound). Very quiet in normal use, though I'm probably not pushing it past 50%.

I've seen a few reviews, it looks like sound isn't a issue even if it's under heavy load, which is what I'm looking for. Since coil whine doesn't seem to be a engineered defect that is present in all models I ended up ordering one up and I plan on sending my Corsair back as soon as I get it. This really was perfect timing as I was actually paying attention to PSUs and this popped up. It's still on sale.

Xbit has a review of it which is almost entirely positive.

Kitguru gives it even higher praise...

I just noticed, this has a 7 year warranty. oO

Also for anyone that's researching power supplies, this compilation of PSU reviews is invaluable.
