AMD 690G w/125W TDP CPU?

Mon Feb 25, 2008 6:44 pm

Does anybody know if the motherboards featuring the AMD 690G chipset are able to support the Athlon 64 X2 125watt TDP processors (6000,6400)? No brand in particular, but I was reading some reviews on Newegg and a few of the people mentioned that the 690G motherboards could not support the AMD 125watt processors. Is there any truth to this? If so, how does one find something like that out beforehand, as in the specs, the 690G motherboards say they support all socket AM2 Athlon 64 X2's?

This is the CPU support list for the Giga-byte 690G mobo.

Thanks, I didn't think to look at the manufacturers website... I wonder why some people stated they could not get the 125Watt TDP processors to work properly?

Probably a combination of sloppy preparation and not every part will work 100%. I know I don't expect a machine to work every time I put one together.

I was actually looking at this motherboard on Newegg, which I now see after doing a bit of research on the MSI website does not support the AMD 6000/6400 125Watt processors. Thanks for suggesting I check the manufacturers website, had I not done that I probably would have purchased that motherboard with the AMD 6000 processor, only to find out after I put everything together, that the two were incompatable with each other.

It's odd that they don't mention anything like that on the Newegg specifications. It's a bit deceiving when it says it supports AM2 Athlon 64 X2 processors, but will not support the higher TDP designs.

This looks to be a vendor issue. I've seen plenty of 690G boards with 125w processors.

That page says that MSI only support 89w AMD procs on that list of chipsets. My guess is that MSI saved some money on the VRM's. This would probably mean that overclocking could be reduced on these boards once power usage got to high.

That's part of the reason I am starting to use GB boards more than MSI. I just felt like MSI was skimping on something, since the GB boards were treating me better (more stable and such).

I haven't found a 690 board. I know that AMD made a 89 watt X2 6000, but it was only released on Asia. The new Nforce 630a boards I believe support them though.
