question. does the ds3l come out of box supported the e8400? and which gigabyte motherboards have rev 2.1 and f2 BIOS out of box by gigabyte at newegg.

choose of of these please:

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L

GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3R

GIGABYTE GA-EP35C-DS3R

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3P

Take a look at the front page for the TR System Guide to give you an idea of what motherboard you would want your E8400 to call home. If you also want a guide as to how to overclock, you can see here. For gigabyte only motherboards, you can search newegg for specific criteria you want in a motherboard (such as Gigabyte only). I believe the newer chipsets such as the P31/P35/X38/X48 should support Wolfdale out the box.

I would say either a P35 or X38 motherboard will be your best bet. The DFI LanParty DK X38-T2R looks like a great board if you can afford it. Don't look at one specific board company. Gigabyte is great, but so are Asus, DFI, MSI (sometimes), Abit, and many others.

Gigabyte P35 DS3 & its variants is a good choice.

I just ordered the GA-P35-DS4. I can't wait to get it!!! But the E8400 are out of stock. :( I'm just wondering why you want an Giga-byte mobo.I got one, mainly because of the esata bracket with data and power cables separate. If I could have purchased that accessory by itself, I would have. This will be my first Giga-byte mobo ever. I've always used Asus.

You won't be disappointed with that board. The Gigabyte P965-DS3 board made a believer out of me and now all I buy is Gigabyte.

From this thread I will say yes, but the board may require a bios flash and/or manually setting the cpu multiplier for it to run at the correct speed. I'm not sure if that is an isolated incident or not, but in any event bios flashing on the ds3l is trivial. Just drop the .bin file on a usb flash drive and run the bios-based flashing program.

I have an E8400 sitting in a GA-EP35-DS4. Got the board 2 months ago from Newegg as rev 2.1 with F1 BIOS. It posted just fine. I then used Q-Flash to update the BIOS to (the then current) F2 revision using a floppy. Windows loaded and booted just fine. All is well.

That's a lot of choices for the same chipset from the same motherboard manufacturer.

If we want inexpensive and effective, we should go with the first choice (GA-P35-DS3L).

If we're going to spend more than that...
I like the ICH9R southbridge.
I like overclocking headroom.
I don't like DDR3 yet.
That brings it down to the GA-EP35-DS3R or GA-EP35-DS3P.
One slot or two? If we're going to go crazy, let's' get two. So... we spend $70 extra to get the GA-EP35-DS3P instead of the GA-P35-DS3L for no change in performance. Shoot, now that we're past the $150 mark, we could look at X38 boards!

You won't be disappointed :) I'm eyeing the DS4 myself, mainly for the DTS connect feature which would make it sound a ton better on my speaker setup in the room (Dolby PL II just doesnt do it for me). Otherwise unless you need the extra SATA ports (for example I would more than likely use them), then go for the DS3L.

I just got the ep35-ds3p, replacing a bummed out msi p35 neo2-fr.

I am having trouble overclocking it...with the neo, I hit 4.3ghz easily and with stability.

but all i can get is 3.6 with the GA!?

there must be something i'pm missing...like maybe disabling DES? which i can't find in the bios anywhere

UPDATE!!!

Scratch that, CHECK THIS OUT!

Either you're crazy... or just plain crazy. :P That much juice can't be good for the processor. :o

It's good or benchmark scores tho :D

I gave it that much juice to stabilize it.

lots of ppl can hit 4.5 at lower voltages, but i doubt they are really stable...plus, people that have gone above that freq. i've seen use 2.0v :O!!

So you did that with the Gigabyte board? What did you do wrong the first time you tried then?

If you are not doing CrossFire nor using DDR3, why?

Good for overclocking though you have a good point

Only marginally better compared to a P35. At that point your CPU is more important.

Honestly, if you like such crazy frequencies than get yourself a LN2

Looking at your results, i am really tempted to build a LN2 for myself and try it on my machine...

And BTW 1.6 V is really in danger level zone, your chip will not survive more than an year if you keep V that high.

EDIT: Followed your other thread and found that chipset is already started acting up on you.. hhhmm...

Has anyone had any luck using S3 suspend-to-RAM on a Gigabyte P35 board?
(I've seen numerous postings on Newegg complaining that it doesn't work)

I don't have any trouble with S3 STR on my DS3L.

I don't really give a crap about X38 as a board, but it should probably be mentioned that the majority X38 boards support DDR2, only the really high-end premium ones require DDR3. Also, many of them are dropping to below $200. In fact, Newegg has some Open Box models that are around $125.

A P35+ICH9R board can do all that except SLI with less heat and arguably better stability. I don't want to stake my data on Nvidia RAID anyway. As for SLI, well, just say no.

Running the GA-EP35 DS4R here and it's pretty damn nice paired with an E8400. Worth the extra money.
