Buzzy

Wed Jul 09, 2008 6:19 pm

I recently made the following pc:

Asus P5Q-E Motherboard http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... cture=ASUS
Intel Core 2 Quad q9300 (stock fan) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... ture=Intel
Sapphire Hd 4850 (obviously)(stock cooling) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... e=SAPPHIRE
Mushkin DDR2-800 4gb (2x2gb) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... re=MUSHKIN
Antec Sonata III http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... ture=ANTEC
Samsung SH-S203B http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... torInc(SSI)
D-Link DWA-542 Rangebooster Wireless Network Adapter (if it matters) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... ure=D-Link
Vista Home Premium OEM (64 bit) (if it matters x2) http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php? ... =Microsoft

The processor has been overclocked to approximately 3.2mgz, and doesn't reach temperature of over 60 C, under load (Prime95).

The integrated sound card seems to handle music pretty nice, but when I play Far Cry (Russian), or Heroes 5 (also Russian), I hear the sound but beneath that sound I hear a annoying buzzing sound, on both games, tried two headsets. I already upgraded the drivers, but no go (it stopped the really quiet buzzing sound that was present when I moved a window). Since my music plays properly, I think it might be caused by the fact that those games were written for Windows XP or lower. Anyone no a fix to this? Also I connected the HDA cable into the front panel audio slot on the motherboard, and set the front-audio port in the BIOS to HD. What's wrong?

Ogh wait, I still can hear the really quiet buzzing when I move windows in Vista , any one know how to fix that. Also I hear the same sound when FarCry is loading the map.

You have load-induced noise which is being transmitted into your sound system. I have the same problem with my system, and I don't think you can do anything about it except to get a different motherboard, or buy a discrete sound card. :(

This is a common issue with integrated audio. Unfortunately, there probably isn't a software solution, as the problem is most likely inherent in your motherboard's integrated sound hardware.

In a nutshell, it is difficult to design an integrated audio solution which doesn't pick up electrical interference from other components on the motherboard. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that most consumer motherboards use a 4-layer PCB for cost reasons, which makes shielding of sensitive analog signal traces problematic.

If you find the buzzing noises objectionable, your best option is to buy a discrete sound card. Discrete sound cards get the sensitive audio circuitry away from the stuff on the motherboard that generates electrical interference, and can also use a higher quality 6-layer PCB without driving costs way up (since the board itself is much smaller).

Does this happen from both the front panel audio connection and the ones on the backplane?

Good point. Front panel audio connections can be more susceptible to interference. Try the back panel ones and see if there is any difference.

I'm using the front connector, but when I try to connect my headphones to the back, AudioESP (the software that came with the motherboard), asks me what did I just connect, I click headphone, then it tells me I connected it wrong and shows me a picture telling me to connect to the front. I don't get any sound. When I was installing the motherboard I'm pretty sure that it said that if I connect the front audio connector, then the back one will stop working.

Mine does the same thing in Windows (can't recall if the software has the same name, but it's an Asus P5B-E). When the software pops up just tell it you've connected speakers (I do this as I use my onboard audio for voice chat separate from gaming audio, it works every time and with no bad side effects). That will get the headphones to work and you can see if the buzzing is present there in addition to the front panel.

If the buzz is only on the front panel there isn't much you can do, sadly. It's basically what JBI said, the front panel connections are generally more susceptible to interference. This is almost always because of the cable/connections in the case and not the motherboard itself.

Thanks guys, you saved me $100, connecting to the back audio connector solved the problem(I think). I think I no longer hear interferences.

I was merely commenting that fellow TR Gerbils saved you $100. The G.I. Joe quote was gratuitous. :P
