Intel puts Lucid Hydra on x58

Fri Dec 19, 2008 3:00 pm

No wonder ABIT is considering moving away from the motherboard market.
Companies who wish to compete profitably in this market must find ways to differentiate their products.
Tosiba does it using the downgraded Cell.
Intel is doing it using many value added features.

This one looks like a clear winner.

Hah, for that kind of differentiation, expect to pay at least $300 for just the board, and that limits you to the super-enthusiast market. The mass market (budget and business segments) is the real profit center, even though the per-board take is small. Abit has never been known for high end stuff, and if they can't hack the budget segment they have no chance. Better to cut your losses and exit the market.

All that aside, I'd love a built in Hydra chip, if they can demonstrate solid driver support. Without that, it's a useless trinket.
