Frequent Random Reboots & Freezes

Fri Jan 02, 2009 11:50 pm

hey guys, been a while since i last posted on these forums. I need some help determining what in the heck is wrong with my PC. It just keeps either hard locking a minute or 2 after booting or the blue screen of death pops up and the system reboots after 5 min or so. Funny thing is i just replaced the stock intel cooler with a zerotherm FZN120 HSF which runs the cpu much cooler and now the problems have gotten worse. So does this sound like my CPU is going bad or is something possibly wrong with my ram or motherboard?

PS: I have not done any overclocking to my system at all.

Could be almost anything, but my guess is that the motherboard is starting to go.

Could also be RAM or PSU...

Yes, CPU is possible too (but unlikely).

The first thing I always do when strange problems like this come up is run memtest. Its free, easy to do and doesnt require futzing around inside your case.

thanks for the memtest idea. im going to try that right now. for now, i took out all my ram sticks except 1 to see if the problems continue. i will do the same with each other stick. im praying to god that its one of my ram sticks that is bad and not something else because ram is easiest and definetly the cheapest thing to replace right now.

turns out the first memory stick i tested was the culprit. all the other ones ran error free during 20 min tests. time to give crucial a call and see what they will do about replacing the stick. thanks for the help guys. especially you Hance. you saved me a boatload of time and effort. thanks bigtime.

I'd still run the test again with the other three sticks and let it go overnight, just to be sure. But it sounds like you've probably found the culprit.

i still have the bsod problem and the pc still will freeze up. funny thing is it only does this when i have thermal control set to both TM1 & TM2 in the bios. its like clockwork too. i can go into the bios and set it to both TM1 & TM2 and after the PC reboots and goes into windows, it will either just freeze after a min or i just get the bsod and reboot. but if i set the thermal control to just TM2, my PC runs perfectly fine. and after i replaced the stock cooler with the zerotherm FZN120 HSF, idle cpu temps have dropped from 42-43 C to 34-35 C. i ran prime95 for 11 straight hours without any hiccups and memtest for 8 hours straight with the pair of gb sticks that are/were error free. So does this mean there is also a minor problem with my CPU or motherboard too?
