Best 990FX Motherboard for me.

Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:17 am

Which one is the best 990FX motherboard offered for the following applications, it would be coupled with Bulldozer:

-I will be holding onto my current HD5870's and running them in crossfire. Currently I do not have dual x16 for the crossfire, but this is something I would really like. It must be able to run both graphics cards at x16 along with meeting all other requirements.

-Must be able to support my PCI-E x1 Asus D2X and have proper room for it.

-Must be full sized ATX, where all 3 hole "lanes" will mount normally (most 990X boards are shorter).

-I would like some form of EFI implementation, though I do not know as much as I should about this technology.

-The bigger the heatsink the better. I put my parts into a fairly extreme situation since its a gaming PC focused around being silent, airflow isn't crazy in there and being able to survive high heat is a good thing.

Thanks all! Here is a link to the ones available at newegg so you can skip straight there:

Kinda leaning towards either the $250 Gigabyte or $230 Asus, but would like some input....specifically these 3:

The problem you have is that Bulldozer is not out yet and none of the boards you list have been benchmarked with Bulldozer yet either. I'm sure all of them will work with Bulldozer, but there could easily be some glitches or other unforeseen complications that don't show up until after the reviewers have a chance to try the boards out.

So I'd wait until after BD is on the market and you've read the reviews to make the decision.... one easy check is to see if the board that TR uses when it eventually posts its BD review has the features you are looking for. As long as the TR review doesn't encounter any big problems with the board, you've got a winner right there.

--Many thanks to the TR Forum for advice in getting it built.

All 990FX boards are going to run 16x and 16x for your video cards. If you want a solid UEFI implementation, your only choice is an ASUS board. Any of their 990FX boards will support your PCI-e sound card because they all have at least 3 16x physical slots, the bottom one being x4 electrically. Your x1 card will be fine.

Unless you want to run 3-way Crossfire (16, 8, 8) somewhere down the road, I'd go with the Sabertooth. It meets all your requirements and you could put that $40 saved towards something actually useful.

Note that your Phenom II X4 940 in your signature WILL NOT FIT because it's an AM2+ chip. That means it has one extra pin that will prevent it from fitting an AM3 or AM3+ socket.

Yea I know about the 940 not fitting, thanks! :) I am really just skeptasizing at this point, not looking to purchase before BD comes out.

Kinda settled on the Sabertooth now presuming that everything is good with it. Has the best layout (allows both graphics cards with a gap in the middle) and has good reviews. Gigabyte suffers from v-drop apparently, and the crossfire isn't setup good for dual cards + soundcard.
