new motherboard, won't boot

got an old oem foxconn/i5 650 from someone; it would boot (no led that I can see, proprietary front panel pin out so I couldnt confirm I was shorting the right headers), so I bought a new MSI board and same thing. No post, fan's won't spin up. This is with just cpu (with or without ram). Using a 20pin psu but that shouldnt be an issue (and it's confirmed working). Thoughts??

Do you have the auxilary CPU power connected? (top left on the board). What is the exact model of the motherboard and the CPU stepping? It may be that the shipping BIOS on your MSI mobo doesn't support the CPU. Although a quick browse over MSI's H55 mobos shows that the i5-650 is supported in the lowest BIOS revision for each board. Try to provide as much information as possible.

even with a fried cpu, I would imagine the board would at least spin up the cpu fan. I'm thinking DoA; it seems unlikely that I'd have two dead 1156 boards (yes I've taken stats; i know that to be a falacy)

One thing to check for esp with different boards is to make sure all the mounting points match up with the board holes. Some boards do not use all the mounting holes and some do, and there is a chance with a board switch you may have a mounting post grounding out on the bottom of the new board.

HA, yeah no kidding. I had an Abit mobo with a post code display that saved my hair from being ripped out a couple times.

I'm assuming you already tried clearing the CMOS?

You could also try the: unplug PSU AC cable, press power button, plug PSU AC cable back in, press power button again trick. I've seen that fix all kinds of funky problems.
