64GB Dual-Rank ECC Ram on socket 1155 question

Thu Nov 01, 2012 3:12 am

I'm currently specking out a new data mining machine for the lab and my goal is to get as much RAM in there for as little money as possible.

Because I need relatively high single thread performance (we simply don't have the time to multithread much of our code), my current idea is to go with a Xeon E3-1220V2 on an ASUS P8B-X board with socket 1155. I want to get 64GB of RAM in there, but 16GB ECC modules are generally dual-rank. Now, I am wondering whether this would still allow me to populate all four DIMM banks, or whether I could only use two if modules are dual-ranked.

Help with this question would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anybody has an even cheaper way to get to 64GB (or even 128GB), I'd love to hear it.
