18 GB of RAM installed and only 14 GB showing

Hello,

I have an Asus PT6 Deluxe LGA 1366 x58 motherboard and 18 GB of RAM installed. For reference it is an old Alienware Area 51 x58 desktop. Anyway, after a new installation of windows 7 Pro 64 bit on a new hard drive, the OS only shows 14 GB of RAM, like one of the slots with 4 GB isnt working. A quick look at CPU-Z revealed that all 6 slots were working (3 4GB PNY sticks and 3 2GB Corsair) and showed a grand total of 18 GB.

I checked the specs of the motherboard and it shows max supported memory at 24 GB.

I did not find any settings in the BIOS that would "turn off" a memory slot and if CPU-Z is detecting all 18 GB of RAM wouldn't that mean that the slot and RAM were working correctly? In the BIOS it reads only 14 GB of RAM so I am assuming it has something to do with the BIOS settings...

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
-Torbs

Check your motherboard BIOS settings for an option to remap memory above 4 GiB. There's probably some help buried in this epic thread:

It does sound like it could be related to a memory shadowing problem; though usually that's not a full 4GB, this is a somewhat unusual configuration so who knows. A quick glance at the manual online didn't suggest that option is exposed in the BIOS, but the manuals tend to reflect the first version of the BIOS and don't get updated with BIOS updates -- and there have been several BIOS updates for that motherboard. Do you have the latest (or at least a fairly recent) one?

I will check and see if I have the latest version of the BIOS. That is something I forgot to check on my first once over.
