Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 AM3+ Motherboard Sleep settings

Wed Jun 05, 2013 12:41 pm

I have a bit of an issue with a recent build, specs are as follows:

Motherboard - Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AM3+
CPU - AMD FX-6350
RAM - PNY 8 GB 1333 MHz
PSU - Corsair CX 430W
HDD - WD 500 GB 7200 RPM
GPU - MSI AMD Radeon HD 7770 GHz

This issues is, whenever the computer goes to sleep, I cannot wake it up unless I either unplug the PSU and plug it back in (or hit the switch on the PSU). I enabled the Wake by Keyboard (Any Key) on Gigabyte's UEFI, but that hasn't worked.

My best guess is that for whatever reason, it is going into a sleep state that just doesn't jive with the PSU, however, I can't seem to find the setting in the UEFI that lets me specify what type of sleep the computer should go into.

Other than this the computer works like a dream, slick, responsive, and the SSD arrives next week so once I throw the OS onto my new Samsung 840 SSD it should be snappy as hell.

Any ideas?

Do you have any fans plugged directly into the PSU? A small load might be enough to keep the PSU happy.

No fans are plugged directly into the PSU, the 2 case fans are plugged into the Sys Fans connectors on the Mobo itself.

I will try plugging one of the case fans directly into the psu, see what happens.

On my old rev 1.0 UD3 I can set what kind of suspend I want in BIOS. If I set it to S3 STR (Suspend To Ram), it mostly works for me in Linux Mint.

Well looks like it just needed a BIOS flash. Good to go. Just an FYI to anyone thinking of getting this motherboard, update the bios stat!

I spoke too soon. A BIOS update seemed to work at first, by that I mean that after I flashed the BIOS to the most current version, I could hit the power button, or the keyboard to wake it from sleep. However, a week after that was done, my friend bought a SSD 128 GB Samsung 840 which I promptly threw into the case, installed the OS, and thought I was good to go.

Now, I have the same problem I started out with, even with the BIOS updated, the computer will not wake from sleep. It requires the machine to be unplugged or the PSU switched off, for it to return to life. Obviously the computer doesn't like this and as such my friend has disabled his sleep mode and gotten into the habit of just shutting his comp down.

Ideally, I would like to find some sort of fix for this. I'm almost positive that the issue lies between the Mobo and the PSU, however I cannot find any settings in the UEFI itself to specify the sleep level (S1, S3).

I have not yet tried plugging a case fan directly into the PSU yet (I cannot find the cable I need). I am willing to buy a cable if need be, however, it was working just fine before I installed the SSD.

Thoughts?

I have the same problem with my gigabyte sniper 3 I just got, I used to set it for S1 on my old board in the bios and everything was fine. With my new board if it sits too long, it goes into deep sleep and only way to get it back up is with a power cycle. Ive been very frustrated by it too as there are almost no settings to adjust in the power menu on this board also, so Ive also got in the habit of turning it off when I'm not using it to prevent having to crash it every time it locks up.
