Need new ram for an old system

Postposted on Sat Aug 24, 2013 7:32 pm

Hey folks!

I've got a self built PC, built on an Asus A8V deluxe 929 skt mobo, AMD fx53 CPU, and 2Gb of Corsair XMS DDR1 184pin memory (the kind with the silver heat spreaders), which I put together in 2004 and until 4 days ago was still serving me faithfully. 8)

Alas for me, after increasingly frequent BSODs from Windows XP, a standalone Memtest86 indicates a failed bit in one of the memory modules. Still, 9 years flawless performance seems damn good, but now I need some compatible memory.

Any recommendations?

Greetings from Blighty,

1GB DDR-400 modules go for about $20-$25; no idea what the prices are like in the UK. Your motherboard can handle up to 4 1GB sticks but WinXP will only be able to see a bit over 3GB, so there's not much point in buying more than 3 of them.

Well, your cheapest option is probably second hand, via eBay or something similar. However, if you want *new* DDR memory, Crucial UK still sell it, although it's £40 for a 2x1GB set.

Oh, and welcome to the boards :). I'm in the damp country bolted on the top.

Cheers for welcome & kind offers. I'm going to do some more standalone testing if possible to check that the discs are in good shape, as that might tilt the decision towards a new PC instead.

If not, I'll get some new memory, since I'd rather have the comforting knowledge of a statutory guarantee etc  but thanks for the offer, Axeman. :D

I've got a pair of DDR400 1GB sticks sat on my desk. Just pulled them out of an old machine that has been in a shed for about a year... they were working fine when they went in there and they don't look like they've deteriorated but I don't have anything to test them in.

I'm near Heathrow... Not desperately keen to faff around with postage but could organise it if necessary.

If you can pick them up then you can just have them.
