you can link to the image or use
[img][email protected]/img.jpg[/img]
either way should work.

here's an example from etliena:
img http://makumaro.net/photos/june/bladesofgrass.jpg /img
(brackets removed so as not to repeat the picture)

Basically just open the image up on the Internet and paste the address into the img tags.

Sweet.

What is that archee-curvee thingie going from bottom center frame to viewers left then back to top center frame...kind of like an arch?

Of course, I'm deeply distressed thinking of a bottle having spilled its contents! :P

The curvee thingie is the lid of a water barrel in my garden thats used to collect rainwater for the plants. It'd rained recently and the lid itself had collected some water as you can see. The bottle was actually dug up from the garden when the foundations for a shed were being prepared, its only about 3 inches long :)

Excellent shots Liquid.

Finally time for an update. Here are some shots I took today. I got out a little bit late, so it was already getting dark when I took these shots. I had to shoot everything at 800-1600 ISO and low apertures.

I was in a swamp looking for something to shoot and following this little guy. I was really luck; he just stopped and faced me for a few seconds while I clicked of 8 or so shots. I was completely eaten by mosquitoes so, damnit, you're all going to see the shot (even though it was too dark in the swamp to get good colors).

Image

ISO: 800
Focal Dist: 300mm
Exposure time: 1/30s
Aperture: f/5.6

Scaled to 800 pixels wide and convered to B&W.

I was actually getting disappointed that I only took 8 shots up until I came to a field with a ton of flowers. There were bees everywhere so I decided to shoot a little more macro:

Image

ISO: 800
Focal Dist: 300mm
Exposure time: 1/200s
Aperture: f/11

Cropped slightly and resized a lot.

Image

ISO: 800
Focal Dist: 300mm
Exposure time: 1/200s
Aperture: f/10

Cropped slightly and resized a lot.

This final shot isn't really macro. I decided to back off a lot put the frame around the flower and then just wait for the bee (which I knew was going to land on that flower).

Image

ISO: 800
Focal Dist: 300mm
Exposure time: 1/200s
Aperture: f/14

Resized and slightly cropped.

These shots have a lot of noise, but there a Windows program called neat image or something which I might use to decrease the noise if I print one of them. All photos shot with an EOS 300D.

LJ, fantastic pics! :D

Some questions:

What focal length would be a minimum requirement to take really good macro pics?

In your pics you refer to some noise, although I can't really see it. Or was it evident in the original pictures you took?

Gorgeous shots, LJ, it's like you asked the bee to pose for you.

Thank you very much. The minimum focal distance question is kind of difficult. As far as I know, most macro lenses are 50-105mm or so and the really good ones are F/2.8 at that zoom. The shots I took here were at my full zoom and maybe 3.5-4 feet away when I could've been about 3 feet away. In theory you could take these shots with any 1:2 macro lens and the advantage of shorter focal lengths is that you have a much nicer depth of field.

I'd say you could comfortably get shots this close with a 150mm zoom, maybe less. My camera also has a 1.6x cropping factor that (effectively) 'multiplies' the zoom. 300mm is overkill for these shots but I wanted to be far enough away so that I could focus on some closer flowers if the bees flew closer.

A patient person could achieve closer and far better shots then this with a 50mm lens "reverse macro" lens.

Those are scaled down a *lot*. The crops were about 1500-2300 pixels wide before I scaled them to 800. Noise tends to reduce a lot when you scale like that. If I print one of them, I will definitely run it through neatimage before printing because it _will_ show up in 30" x 20" prints.

Gorgeous shots, LJ, it's like you asked the bee to pose for you.

Thanks. I took about 60 shots of bees and these were just about the only good ones (i was using a tripod as well). I think I would've been better off shooting 1/400 with 1600 ISO (the bees move quickly and I was still getting camera shake).

That's an extremely nice shot, fallboy. Did you use flash and/or photoshop to get the bird so well exposed against the sky?

Cheers LJ! I actually used Paint Shop Pro to Increase the color saturation, no flash was used. He was perched outside my bedroom window and i just managed to snap him from between the curtains before he flew away. I'll post a link to the original when i get home later tonight

That's a nice shot lex-ington. Where did you take it?

Unfortunately I'm going to be crowding this thread a bit with too many of the same shot. I went out again today in an effort to get a better shot of a bee so I could make a 30" x 20" print to be proud of.

In experimenting with different things, I used Unsharpen Mask on some of these.

Image

ISO: 400
Exposure Time: 1/250
Aperture: f/9.0
Focal Length: 300mm

Image

ISO: 400
Exposure Time: 1/250
Aperture: f/13.0
Focal Length: 248mm

Image

ISO: 1600
Exposure Time: 1/200
Aperture: f/36.0
Focal Length: 248mm

Image

ISO: 400
Exposure Time: 1/250
Aperture: f/16
Focal Length: 248mm

At some point I changed my focal length to 248mm and forgot to change it back to 300mm so I could get the most macro ability out of my lens.

That shot was taken on the second floor of my parents new home in Freeport, Bahamas. The house is still being built, but my sister just went up early one morning to "take a look", and that was the picture she took.

I have a few more to post, I just have to resize them and add them to my website (which is still under construction).

Those shots are awesome. I'd love to have the resources to be able to get up in a plane that often to take shots.

I don't know if I've posted this already and can't be bothered to go through the listing but my photobucket album is public and it's at: http://photobucket.com/albums/v198/smakkythecamel/

Of the first 6 photos, 1, 2 and 5 are my wifes, and 3, 4 and 6 are mine. My wife came second in a photo comp with number 2, and all of the 6 except 4 got highly commended and are going in a book. Not bad eh? Too bad I lost to a girl though.

Every year in our front garden we get these monsters. Really cool spiders, only half grown. I have no idea how they find mates as I only see on at a time in any given area.

Me and the wife on the same beach as the one I posted above. AS you can see, the tide is VERY low. Look to the left and you can see the outline of where the water gets to when the tide is in.

Duplo: awesome pics. What did you shoot them with?

I moved recently, and moving day in Madcity is not much fun. Unfortunately, I don't yet have Internet access at my new residence -- I do, however, spend a lot of time on the opposite side of town and have seen some awesome sights. Hopefully I will get out and shoot a few shots this weekend.
