General photography thread [img heavy]

Thu Jun 17, 2004 11:01 pm

Sanity guidelines:

1) Please keep images in the thread small. Try to stay <= 800 pixels wide. Keep images in thread under 150K. If you want to show off your great 14 megapixel image, link to it.

2) Don't post anything that isn't work safe. The is techreport so keep it PG.

3) If you are going to post more than 4 or 5 pictures, break it up into two or more posts. This will help keep pages of the thread from becoming unbalanced.

4) If possible post images with EXIF data in tact so people can check what camera/settings you used.

5) Enjoy the pictures. Offer constructive criticism where warranted.

This picture is a little blown out around the top. It was the night after I got my camera and I had no idea how to use the manual controls yet.

TheGleek, you need a new camera, dude. Nothing particularly wrong with composition, exposure, etc, but your pics would be a lot nicer if simply taken with a better quality camera with a few more pixels. Look at some of the new camera releases that are really affordable and small. I don't want to be an ass, but if you are going really cool places like that, you will want to look back at those pictures with some decent quality later on

My vote would be to have a digital photograpy forum, and informal camera reveiws that are in line with techreport.com. If these guys want hits, reveiw some tech-geek style cameras. I would be happy to moderate a forum like that part-time. I am getting tired of STF at dpreveiw, too many posts to follow.

Here are a few recent ones (Taken with a Sony V1)

High-resolution transmission electron micrograph of a small twinning defect in a diamond crystal lattice. Taken using a JEOL 4000 ex HRTEM operated at 400 keV. Digital image acquired by a 1 megapixel (it is an old microscope, so sue me!) Gatan slow scan CCD camera. Magnification about 1.2Mx, IIRC.

Heya, Fellow Photographers,

Perhaps we should adopt a guideline or two on posting images....for example, let's format at 288 pixels (4 inches, 72dpi) wide, and/or if a larger size is needed, link.

Are there any other pro shooters on this forum?

Not 288 wide, thats too small, i think 600wide is better. It would probably fit 1024x768 pretty good. Without breaking the tables. 800 is a bit too wide. Or were you thinking bandwidth wise?

I usually format all my webimages to 600 wide anyway so. See the ones above(the tulip is a bit wider but its not the usual ones....).And somewhere below 50KB.

One thing though, dont post a bundle of images in the same post. 3 or at max 5 if there is a special reason, and not 15 variations of the same thing please. That way we keep each pach a sane amount of data to be donwloaded as each page only will take so many posts. I think it's better to post a few images a time, that way the viewers wont get the spam feeling. Also before you post. Think just a though, do i want to show these, what will they get out of viewing it. Dont be a slave to the rules, but keeping it clean is better in the long run. And we want this to be a marthon, right?

Equipment used.
Olympus E-10, 4MP.
Eos 33/Elan 7 with verticalgrip. 28-135 IS USM, Sigma EX 70-200/2.8 APO HSM. Mostly using Provia and Velvia slide film together with Portra 160VC negative film. Also a roll of Fuji superia slips through once in a while.
Manfrotto 055+486rc2 tripod+head and a Gitzo monotrek 1560 monopod.

Are there any other pro shooters on this forum?
Aspiring to be in a few years. Right now im trying to build a portfolio and learning all the stuff i can, and in a year or two we are a couple of people thats aiming for starting a company doing some media stuff. Photography, Video, Articles, etc. But theres alot of work in the meantime, drivers license, building capital(both money and show off work), equipment, lights, studio, camera, getting the idea finalized and formulated, etc.

Opps on my big one, my bad (my pictures I mean  ) ! That is how they are presented on my site and I don't have access to my pics here at work to resize them. I will fix later this evening, for now I converted to links. Usually I keep everything less than or equal to 800x600 unless the effect will suffer like sunsets and landscapes that have a lot of distant detail.

Probably a reasonable size for this thread is a 640 max dimension, that way the text doesn't scroll too far to the right.

3 pics per post max as well.

Aphasia, do you do a lot of High-key stuff? The Orchid looks pretty cool like that. My old man grows orchids for awards an fun, but every time I go over, it is dark or raining and I can't get good exposures in his greenhouse. Also the V1 has a max aperature of 2.8 which leads to lousy, blurry pictures when the flowers are moving in the air from fans. I need to play some more.

I am getting the itch to get a good DSLR like the Oly8080. No dark image subtraction on long exposures, and I have been trying to take lightning shots and miss quite a lot during the dark frame.

yeah i know. while i was in India, i was taking those photos with the
digicam my boss gave me, and it was a piece of crap.

i do need a good digicam, i love that new sony cyber thing that can fit
into yer pocket.. its over 4 megapixels too i think.

i'm just short on cash and the deals that dposcorp presented to me, i might
be interested in the higher megapixel one...

(ps: thanks for taking out those HUGE 1024xblah pics. my ghod!)

After that orchid ive been experiementing with it more and more. Because i also found the effect being pretty novel, and not so used from what ive seen. Thats taken with a D60 i borrowed and a macro, but i usually uses flash to get the right amount of light, even outside. This as long exposures arent friendly to moving flowers.

Nitpick, the 8080 isnt a DSLR, only SLR like as it uses the sensor for an EVF instead of having a mirror. Och, and get a 5MP camera instead, the 8MP while having a nice res, can be a bitch for noise. Larger pixels are generally better then more. Thats why the DSLR is very usable up to iso 800 and even 1600 is passable. The 3200 iso mode shouldnt be used unless the event is quite a bit more important then the image quality(news flash from accidents, etc).

Heres my most recent High-Key/Pastell macro shot. Olympus E-10 and a Nissin 350T(flash from the 70'ies).

Wow.. fantastic pics guys. Agree with Frobozz on the two pics, really amazing.

mattsteg, can I know what settings you took that pic on?

For a DSLR, either the Canon 300D or the Nikon D70, both very good cameras, even if they're a bit on the large side.

I have some pics I won't mind posting but I would need a web address to point to right? How does it work with FTP? I don't have a web address so, is there another way to get pics up without having one?

Thanks

I'll link these up only as i dont have any smaller versions up yet.

This is the result you get with a cheap negscanner like the Minolta Scan Dual 3. Which is probably the cheapest. Good enough for those money.
They are a bit on the soft side compared to the results i wouldve gotten with a 6MP DSLR. Thats why im aiming for the follower to the Canon 10D or if thats not good enough, i'll probably splurge for a 1D mk2. But only if i see that i will make some money from it someday.

These were taken on a yougthgroup camp a couple of weeks ago. We were out hiking in the mountains there among other things.

Eos 33 - Sigma 70-200/2.8. Kodak Royal Supra 200(not my choice of film, but workable).

The first one is of a Baby Aligator

The second is of a Bumble Bee on A Flower

I have had this camera less than a year and I have already taken over 900 pictures!
