Visaul quality of VGA connection

Hey guys,

I got a 22" LCD monitor today and when I brought it home I found that there was only a VGA connection. I thought there was a DVI connection too, but I guess I was wrong. I game a lot (mainly FPSs) and I was wondering if the quality would be less or the same with the VGA connection, VGA to DVI adapter, and a DVI connection.

I have a 8800GT and the monitor is an Envision H22W. Thanks a lot!

by just brew it!
DVI will give you the best quality. VGA and VGA-to-DVI adapter can range from very nearly as good as DVI to pretty bad, depending on the quality of the cables and the DACs on the video card. VGA-to-DVI adapter is the least desirable of the three, since the extra connectors in the signal path can cause additional signal degradation (but in practice it will probably be indistinguishable from straight VGA).

The difference will be most noticeable on text, not gaming.

Thanks! I think I will keep the monitor then.

Just wondering, did you get that at BestBuy?

An LCD monitor without DVI or HDMI digital inputs is crippleware. Don't do it.

Yeah, I got it at Best Buy.

I heard that Target has a good deal on a 22" Westinghouse so I'm gonna check that out and if it is good enough then I will probably take the Envision back. Thanks.

Another point worth considering is HDCP. If you ever wanted to playback protected HD video at uncrippled resolutions on your computer I believe you need a digital connection with HDCP support. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that's how it works with set top players at least.

Lack of DVI is one of the reasons I picked the Samsung over the Envision. If your Bestbuy still happens to have the Samsungs pay the extra $50 and pick it up.

*edit* The Samsung doesn't have any height adjustment if that matters to you. I didn't know that until I bought it, but it's not that big a deal for me.

Friends don't let friends use analog.
Seriously take it back. It's not worth your time. At that high of a resolution, 1680x1050 it will look bad a text. You also can't use it properly with the next-gen consoles or DVD/HD players.
