Okay this is an upgrade for my mom's computer, so it is not being used for gaming...only surfing the net and office related stuff. I want to get her a nice LCD with DVI keeping it around $300-$350 or so. So if anyone has any good recomendations that fit what I am looking for, post away.

Dell 22" is still a TN panel. So it will still look like sh**.

I have the Samsung 226BW also, and really happy with it.

At the high end of your price range, I've heard good things about the 22" LGL226WTY-BF - $350. I suspect if she hasn't got an issue with TN viewing angles, the $219 Acer 22" monitors on newegg would be sufficient. Use the other $100 to buy a Logitech Mx Revolution. For $350, I'd rather bump up to 24" though.

If you want an S-PVA panel for better viewing angle, I've heard of people picking up the Doublesight 24" (Samsung S-PVA) for <$400 with coupons right now.

If you feel like going to 24" TN panel, there are a few of them right at the $350 range on newegg (like this one).

I think if you had more experience configuring monitor settings, you might realize that each monitor has its own particular settings that generate the "standard" colors.

Brand preference should not be determined by "default" color settings.

Its not on default and believe me , I tried every setting there is along with the software it came with.

Ok , i Have to admit you were right , I did try everything except Nvidia's Ntune.
OMG what a difference in the back ground , I cant believe I have had this monitor for probably 7 months and didnt realize this.
What a difference !! Such sharp colors , Yeah I would recomend the 226 bw if you are able to use Ntune

I dont understand what the big deal is about viewing angles... I mean, who the heck doesn't sit directly in front of their computer ??? Isn't response time more important?

Image quality is more important to me than response time is.

The problem is low response time + cheap monitors are mainly tailored for the gaming population. While not bad in themselves for what they are designe to do (play games), it is not acceptable to people who do something else, such as photo editing or watching movies, where they value colour reproduction over response times. Most of the fast response times can be achieved because they use 6-bit TN panels, which can physically reproduce 262,144 colours, compared to 8-bit's capability of 16.7 million. Smart image processing algorithms called dithering can create the illusion of more colours for those 6-bit panels, but for people who are picky enough the colours will look "washed out" to them because of the lack of colours (basically losing shades of different colours).

Skin tones, sunrise/sunset, and basically anything with a smooth gradient of colours are the tests for colour reproduction.

Also, when we are talking large monitors like the 20" and up, even if you are straight on with the monitor you will still be at an angle, especially when you are looking towards the edges for viewing angles to matter. TN panels are notoriously poor with viewing angles. A slight shift and the colours will look so different.

I guess I have to shut up asap, because now that you know and you start looking for the imperfections, you will not be able to get those out of your head and you will get hooked on higher priced, better quality monitors. Ignorance is really bliss when it comes to LCD quality.

Also, if you use your 22"/24"/27" monitor as a TV or display for an Xbox 360 or DVD, it's nice not to have to sit at a particular angle and distance, especially when you have more than 1-person watching.

It's also very useful if you are ever showing someone something (particularly graphic-related) to have good viewing angles when they are looking over your shoulder. I always get irritated trying to look at things someone else is showing me on their laptop while they use it. Most displays contrast or wash out so much at different angles, it's nearly impossible to see without the other person moving out of the way.

my roomate and i picked up a pair of 17" eizo lcd's for $50/ea. pva panels ftw! matches nicely with my 2005fpw (the eizo actually has higher contrast and looks better imo). my roomate, however is using it with his 22" acer. he was completely content with the acer before he got the eizo. now he can see how crappy the acer really is

I just got a chance to use the $230 Acer on newegg (22") today for a few hours hooked up to my computer. It was better than I expected.

The speakers are entirely unusable (imo) but that's not why you buy the monitor anyway (similar to headphones turned up loud sitting 2 feet away). No dead pixels. Color seemed good, more than bright enough. Games looked fine, no problems there. Overall, not too bad.

Certainly a perfectly acceptable 22" for general use. Viewing angle issues were not present when seated in front of it, but clearly height can be an issue. It was impressive how big it felt compared to my 21" CRT. Its resolution scaling was not half-bad in games. The desktop becomes a bit blurred (if you can call it that) in say, 1600x1200, but it's not unusable. Obviously, you wouldn't use a 4:3 resolution like 16x12 anyway, except perhaps in gaming.

In its native resolution, it is very sharp. Couldn't detect any backlight bleeding or anything like that. For a cheap 22", I would recommend it in the future.

That is the one I ended up getting, like you said it is very nice for the price.
