Different types of panels

You know what would be great? A thread that would explain the differences between the different types of displays, namely TN, IPS, etc., I'm not quite sure what they are.

Here is a far more in-depth evaluation and explanation of the different panel types. This article delves much more into the science...but it is an interesting article even if it a little dated. It is still relevant today nonetheless.

Here are my quick Cliff's notes on a napkin:
TN - cheap, fast, poor viewing angles, (usually) bad 6-bit colour
IPS - expensive, slow, good viewing angles, (usually) good 8-bit colours
VA - between TN and IPS

You won't know for Dell until someone else has tried and found out because they may use different types of panels for the same model of monitor. But so far all 22" have been TN panels.

The best way to tell for sure is to go to a store and view them. Here is a list of panels types in use and how to differentiate them.
Intel i7 2700K @ 4.7GHz 1.35v | Megahalems Rev.C + 2x Gentle Typhoon AP15 | ASUS M4E-Z | Corsair Vengeance 16GB @ 1600MHz | MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III | OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS 120GB SSD | PCP&C Silencer Mk II 750W | Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Color accuracy, gradient, response time and contrast ratios are differ from each solution. They are making trade-offs in each of these categories.

None of them can match a CRT at color accuracy, response time and contrast ratio.
Ivy Bridge i5-3570K@4.0Ghz, Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, 2x4GiB of PC-12800, EVGA 660Ti, Corsair CX-600 and Fractal Refined R4 (W). Kentsfield Q6600@3Ghz, HD 4850 2x2GiB PC2-6400, Gigabyte EP45-DS4P, OCZ Modstream 700W, and PC-7B.
