Another reason to hate Comcast

I'm sure some other people saw this on Slashdot today (or on Engadget or AVS Forum last week): a link to the Comcast HD Quality Reduction: Details, Screenshots thread on AVS forums.

Those screenshots are ridiculous. That gross macroblocking makes a mockery of supposed "HD" content. For anyone worried about "HD Lite" on satellite, if this is the future of HD cable, I'd take lower-resolution MPEG4 satellite HD Lite over full-res recompressed MPEG2 that looks like it was put through a mosaic filter. Gross.

To quote the best typing game ever made:

"How could any one DO this?"

Most, if not all cable companies, recompress their HD signals. It sucks, but its a fact of life.

Jesus that is ugly. I've noticed HD's potential on comcast... when they come back from a commercial there is often about 1/2 second of uncompressed picture -- it's stunning... but it always goes back to the same old ****. I've seen some of it get so compressed that it looks about as bad as a DVD. The biggest advantage turns into 16:10 instead of 4:3.
