Webcam compatible w/windows 98se

Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:39 am

I am looking for a webcam compatible with windows 98se. Looking to connect via usb port. looking for average resolution. Computer retailer, Best Buy, says nothing new that is sold by them is compatible?. Suggested trying to find used. Any suggestions?

I hate to be a buzz kill but I believe this is going to be kind of a tall order. All the new hardware on the market today is going to be limited to at least XP, although you may be able to find stuff that works with 2k. Motherboard chipset support for 98SE was being phased out about 4-5 years ago so peripheral support is going to be next to nil now. Unfortunately your best bet is probably going to be to check out legacy products and go to ebay.

The older Logitech/Connectix cameras were fairly popular back then. The resolution won't be much, of course, and I recall that you'd get only a few frames per second at best.

Indeed. You might be able to find a webcam that works, but it won't be a modern webcam experience. I wouldn't count on better than 320*240 @ 5 fps. USB support was never very good in Win98.

Is there some reason you need a webcam for 98? Perhaps it's time to buy a "new" computer for your grandmother?

I had a black and white one that had a parallel interface, and it got 20 fps or so.
