How much are you wanting to spend? Dell's 1907FPV monitors are pretty nice IMO. It's supposed to have a PVA panel. If you get this one, you should have a video card with DVI output.
Those are a bit old, I'd have trouble finding one new.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... oc=1907fpv

Dell still sells 'em with Optiplexen.

I'm really leaning toward this one now. Does the 1907FPV do 1:1? So I could run 1280x960 if I wanted to with no scaling?

Also, how is the response time for gaming? I don't game a whole lot on my computer anymore, but I don't want it to be smear city if I do. Thanks.

I'm looking at the Samsung 943T also...looks good except for that response time.

You know, there are monitors (like the Dell UltraSharp line) that have pivoting stands. That might be the best of both worlds for you, combining a tall, narrow desktop and panoramic gaming.

Can't answer those, sorry. The FPVs we normally get for the higher-ups that don't do gaming but want nice displays. If you've got an Nvidia video card you could try using its scaling instead of the monitor's.

I was going to link to that too. At my old job, we used to buy all of our computers and monitors off of Dell Outlet. We didn't have any problems with reliability at all, and zero dead pixels. They also pack them much more securely than the non-outlet. Go figure.

Free shipping on outlet monitors through October. That HP is nice, but for roughly the same price and only a slightly larger desktop footprint and 1600x1200 instead of 1280x1024, the 2007fp seems like a better deal to me.

According to flatpanels.dk you will be put through a panel lottery between a LG-Philips S-IPS or a Samsung S-PVA panel? :o

I am worried that 1600x1200 may be a bit too small for me. I ran my old 19" monitor at 1280x960 and it was just about right. 1280x1024 is in that ballpark. The few times I ran my old CRT at 1600x1200, it was too tiny.

Don't forget that a 19" CRT is more like 18.1" viewable, while a 20" LCD is 20" viewable.

20" is a lot bigger than your 19" (18" viewable) CRT, though. I'd be more worried that your video card wouldn't cut it for running games at native resolution.

1280x960 or even 1152x864 should be fine. The scaling on my 2005fpw was great, even running 1280x800 on the 1680x1050 native. *shrug*

For the record (since I'm talking up my 2007fp so much) it is revision A05 with the Samsung panel. Also for the record, I don't game. DVDs look great though!

In regards to the pixel size being too small, according to Wikipedia a 19" 1280x1024 has 86.3 pixels per inch whereas a 20" 1600x1200 has 99.6 pixels per inch.

Wow, those Dell 2007fp refurbs went quick. None to be found when I looked about 5PM.

In his AnandTech forum thread xtknight lists the LP1965 in the office section, P-MVA panel with medium image delay and "Doesn't have the best color setup." He is very picky about color fidelity and it is probably tweakable. Although it might require a calibrator to be exact.

Last fall I was on the verge of buying the LP2065 even though the panel lottery was running mostly A-MVA, but then my open box NEC 20WMGX2 popped up. This year the panel lottery has been reported to be almost all (YMMV) S-IPS. The current Newegg price seems a bit high, but "might" be an indication of an S-IPS panel. Then again, it rarely hurts to shop around.

My NEC also has the .255 pixel pitch and text is small at native settings. However, as JAE recommend, using large icons and setting Windows text to 120dpi works well, plus Ctrl+scroll in Firefox makes nearly all the internet quite readable. Major upside, the pictures are very impressive.

I have the 2001FP and the stated response time is 16ms and I have never seen it smear or anything like that. That doesn't mean you wont but I have no complaints about mine.

What about the 1905FP? Specs look identical to the 1907FPV, and anandtech seemed to have liked it back in the day http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showd ... =2332&p=10. I can get a refurb w/ 90 day warranty for less than $180 shipped on ebay...thoughts?

edit: or I can get a refurbed unit from Tigerdirect for about $200 shipped...with a 12 month warranty. Yeah, I know...Tigerdirect...but there's no rebates involved. :)

The only thing that concerns me a bit about it is that some people say it ghosts in games. Anandtech seemed to think it's okay, so I dunno.

I am pretty certain the 1905fp has the same 16ms response time as my 2001fp and I have never had a problem with ghosting on it. If you are really curious to know if it will ghost my wife has the 1905fp so I could hook it up to my system and play a game and see if I notice anything.

I second the 1907FPV still available from Dell although I am not sure how it would perform on games (20ms) as I don't game. But for great color reproduction and viewing angles it is excellent.

I went to purchase a similar model for my daughter but ordered the 1907FP ie TN panel (Yikes, fast but terrible color and viewing angles) and quickly returned it for the FPV.

Best regards

If you are going to use the monitor for games then you may have no choice but to get a TN to avoid ghosting, assuming you are that sensitive. That's the unfortunate thing about <20" LCD monitors these days. :-?

I would love to hear your impressions on it, please! The specs show a 20ms response for the 1905fp so I'm thinking it's a bit slower.

Ok I will go trade her monitors for a day or two and do some gaming on it and see what I think. I only have a couple of FPS games but I will give them a try. Might also fire up the old need for speed underground and give it a try its fairly fast paced.
